More details have been released about the high-speed chase through Bowling Green that ended in a crash early Friday morning.
Garrick Fetters, 38, of Vanceburg, Kentucky, was arrested by the Ohio State Patrol.
Around 1 a.m., a Bowling Green Police Division officer attempted to stop a 2000 Chevy Malibu for a traffic violation near the intersection of Poe Road and North Main Street. When the vehicle did not stop for the officer, a pursuit began southbound on Main Street.
The officer decided to discontinue the pursuit as Fetters’ vehicle was approaching the downtown area at a speed of 75 mph. The officer noted in his report that the downtown normally has a lot of foot traffic on Fridays around 1 a.m.
As Fetters’ vehicle sped through downtown, an Ohio State Patrol trooper in the downtown area picked up the pursuit heading south on South Main Street.
According to the police report, the suspect’s vehicle slid sideways though the intersection of South Main Street at Napoleon Road. The car slid into the parking lot of BG Battery striking a traffic post/sign knocking it over. The vehicle quickly accelerated and jumped the curb at the rear of BG battery and blew through the fence.
The car continued eastbound through the grass and into the parking lot of the old Checker`s bar. The suspect vehicle then was observed going airborne and struck the 8 foot tall chain link fence in the rear of 124 E. Napoleon Road, rolling over, and coming to a rest on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
The suspect was then observed exiting the vehicle from the passenger side, jumping down, and fleeing on foot. A BGPD officer and state trooper gave chase and caught Fetters behind an apartment building at 214 Napoleon Road.
Fetters, who was complaining of chest and knee pain, was taken by a BG Fire Division ambulance to Wood County Hospital.
A search of Fetters’ car reportedly showed several syringes in plain view. A handgun and a baggie with white powder were also found inside the vehicle.
The State Patrol handled the arrest.
