Lakeside Theatre stages screwball holiday romantic comedy

Kristin Shields as columnist Elizabeth Lane and Eric Huffman as Jefferson Jones star in 'Christmas in Connecticut'

The Lakeside Theatre’s production of “Christmas in Connecticut” continues through this weekend with shows Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. at the Maumee Indoor Theatre, 601 Conant St. Maumee.

Staged as a radio play based on the holiday classic of the same name, “Christmas in Connecticut” tells how the holiday upended the life of beloved columnist Elizabeth Lane. Her columns full of gourmet cooking and family bliss on a farm in Connecticut inspire her readers. And they’re all fiction fashioned y Lane and based on the cooking of her aunt Fruzsina Babitek (Mary Aufman).

A publicity stunt to have  a Navy hero  Jefferson Jones (Eric Huffman) visit for Christmas threatens to unravel her fabrications.

The screwball comedy ensues, including a marriage of convenience to her stuffy friend John Sloan (Nick Boyer), and visit by her publisher Mr. Yardley (Mark Boyer) who has hopes that the story will send circulation numbers through the roof, just as the birth of Elizabeth’s child did eight months before. Of course, the baby is also a fiction.

The screwball comedy is directed by Mary Boyer, who also serves as narrator and plays an Italian cook who butts heads with Fruzsina.

Rounding out the cast are Victoria Rinker and Chris Boyer.

Seasonal music is laced throughout the show with Ashley Lewis at the piano.

Tiedtke’s is celebrated in a series of faux ads.

Tickets are $20 and $16 for seniors and students. Click to purchase.
