From Wood County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board
Eating disorders affect approximately 9% of the population worldwide, and at least 28.8 million Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime.
Factors such as cultural stereotypes, media stories and personal knowledge and experiences contribute to the stigma associated with eating disorders. And because of the stigma, individuals who are struggling with eating disorders often avoid care and do not seek treatment. When left untreated, eating disorders can lead to physical and/or emotional issues that can potentially be fatal.
“Stigma Busters,” an original podcast created by the Wood County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board that addresses mental health topics, released “Feeding Hope” on Feb. 25 to align with National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
Podcast host Courtney Rice, manager of community education and marketing, welcomed Amanda Like, project manager at NAMI Wood County, to the podcast to address the stigma and impact of eating disorders.
To listen to this episode or any of the 24 other episodes of “Stigma Busters,” visit https://stigmabusters.buzzsprout.com or search on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Each month, Rice is joined by local mental health professionals and advocates to talk openly and freely about mental health and substance use-related issues.
