A Toledo man who reported a theft was instead arrested by Bowling Green Police Division for violating a protection order Friday, June 24.
Police responded around 6 p.m., after Darnell Cooke, 41, called to report that the person who drove him to his job in Bowling Green had refused to return items of his that he left in her car.
Dispatch reported that Cooke had an active protection order out of Lucas County.
Cooke told police that he had been driven to work from Toledo by the woman he is to have no contact with. He said the woman drove off with his keys and the charger for his court-assigned ankle monitor in her car.
Cooke said he had called the woman and she had agreed to drive him to work on various days. He told police he thought the protection order was no longer valid as of that day. Dispatch, however, confirmed that the protection order was still in place until March 23, 2023.
Cooke reportedly told police he should not be arrested since he was calling as the victim of another crime. Police said they would still investigate his theft report, however, they could not ignore his violation.
He was taken to Wood County jail.
Police contacted the woman who stated that she was aware of the protection order but felt as though she had to help Cooke get to work. She reportedly told police she had been giving Cooke rides since she felt bad for him and his money situation. She said she did drop him off at work, however, she did not have items belonging to him in her car.
