Mercene L Hanneman

Mercene Louise Hanneman, on Thursday, July 5, 2018 started her next journey, while holding her granddaughter Kara’s hand.

Mercene was born to Hildreth (Deck) & William H. Wood on August 13, 1924 in the living quarters of the Deck Funeral Home located at 218 E. Wooster Street.

In the residence, Mercene’s family also included her grandfather and grandmother, J. F. and Lillian (Hoover) Deck, who founded the family Funeral Business in 1912.  Also residing in the home was Louise Mae Gonyer, who was the housekeeper and helped raise Mercene. Later, she helped raise Mercene’s children, making her a beloved part of their family.

Mercene attended Ridge Street Elementary School and graduated in 1942 from Bowling Green High School.  After graduation in June, she married Karl H. Hanneman.

When Karl was sent overseas in World War II, Mercene enrolled in Bowling Green State University and graduated in 1950 with Bachelor’s Degrees in English and History.

At the end of the war, Mercene and Karl resided in Bowling Green and raised their five children; two sons: Kris (Donna) and Kraig (Kay) along with three daughters: Karla, Kathy (Scott) and Kyle.

Surviving along with her five children are seven grandchildren: Michelle, Reggie, Brad, Kali, Koury, Kara and Kristin; nine great grandchildren: Keegan, Kaleb, Cooper, Anthony, Ma’Riyah, Ma’Kiyah, Hendrix, Coby and Lily; one step great-granddaughter, Kyra; and one step great-great granddaughter, Jade. Grandson Andrew Hines preceded in death.

Mercene attended Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1961 and was licensed as an Ohio Funeral Director becoming the 3rd generation of family Funeral Directors. In 2011, she received recognition from the Ohio Funeral Directors Association for 50 years of faithfully serving the people of the community as a Licensed Funeral Professional.

Mercene was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Life Member of VFW Post 1148 Auxiliary, and American Legion Post 45 Auxiliary.  Mercene was a charter member of the Epsilon Chapter of CCL and ABWA, and a charter and life member of the Wood County Historical Society.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 10, 2018 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the DECK-HANNEMAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 1460 W. Wooster St., PO Box 648, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402 tele:419-352-2171.  Funeral Services will be Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at 10:30AM in the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bowling Green.
