Nathan ‘Bill’ Easterly

Bill Easterly grew up as a fatherless child in West Virginia during the Great Depression. He went on to get a Ph.D. and to become a beloved Biology Professor at Bowling Green State University.

Nathan William (Bill) Easterly was born in Greenbrier County, West Virginia in 1927. His father died from tuberculosis when he was two years old. He went on to attend West Virginia University, where he would get his BA and Ph.D.

At West Virginia University, Bill also met his wife Marjorie, to whom he would be a devoted husband for 66 years of marriage.

Bill became a Professor of Biological Sciences at Bowling Green State University in 1957, where he would remain until his retirement in 1985. In 1969-70, he took Marj and their three young children to Ghana, West Africa, for a year to serve as a Fulbright Professor of Botany at University College of Cape Coast.

Bill was devoted to community service as a member of the Bowling Green Kiwanis Club for 57 years, including terms as President and Secretary. He also served as Secretary to the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill.

As a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, as a gentle, funny, self-deprecating storyteller, Bill is survived and missed by his wife Marj, by his children Patricia, Bill, and John, by his nine grandchildren, and by his five great-grandchildren.
