Bowling Green State University will not have a common read program this year.
Glenn Davis, vice provost for academic affairs, explained in a letter to the BGSU community: “The combination of funding program expenses during a time of budgetary restraint, planning for an author visit without knowing how travel might be restricted, and moving SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) to a virtual experience this summer, presents too significant a challenge to move ahead with a common reading at this time.”
The program encourages students, faculty and staff to read and discuss the same book. The author would then visit campus to give a presentation to the general public. Other events are also organized around the theme.
In 2019, the common read was “What the Eyes Don’t See” by Mona Hanna-Attisha. A book about the Flint Water Crisis by the pediatrician who was one of the key figures sounding the alarm. An art exhibit and panel discussions were also presented.
