Pickup driver arrested after reportedly driving wrong way on West Wooster and crashing into yard

Bowling Green Police arrested a man early Saturday morning for allegedly driving the wrong way on West Wooster Street, failing to stop for police, and crashing into a fence and bushes at a residence.

Around 3:40 a.m., police saw a pickup truck traveling westbound in the eastbound lane on West Wooster Street. During a construction project currently underway, the street is marked for eastbound traffic only from Church Street to Haskins Road.

The officer turned on his overhead lights, but the truck reportedly continued westbound in the eastbound lane. The truck then turned southbound onto Gorrell Avenue, westbound onto Pearl Street, then northbound onto Eberly Avenue.

The truck reportedly failed to make a right turn onto West Wooster, and crashed into a fence and bushes in the 600 block of West Wooster Street. According to the police report, a man jumped out of the driver’s seat and another scooted over to exit from the driver’s door as well.

Both men were ordered to put their hands on the truck and they complied.

The driver, John Garza Jr., 23, of Bryan, reportedly told police they could search him and the truck. Officers reportedly found a small plastic bag containing a white powdery substance on the driver’s seat.

According to the police report, Garza told the officer he couldn`t stop because his brakes weren’t working. He initially denied knowing anything about the plastic bag on the driver’s seat, then reportedly admitted that it was his. He told police he didn’t know what was inside the baggie. An employee of the company towing the pickup later reportedly found another bag of white powder inside the truck. Both bags were sent to a lab to be tested.

Garza was charged with failure to comply with an order of a police officer, failure to control his vehicle, and driving the wrong way on a one-way street. He was taken to Wood County jail.
