Richard “Dick” Powers was born on August 11, 1932 to Eleanor (Kuebler) Powers and Quincy Kay Powers and passed away on June 19, 2017. He graduated from Galion High School in 1951 and then enlisted in the US Navy serving from 1952-1956. Dick earned his Bachelor of Science in Business from Bowling Green State University in 1960 and went on to serve as Director of Purchasing for BGSU until his retirement in 1993.
Dick was happily married to Ellie for 59 years. They delighted in traveling and visiting friends together and were active volunteers throughout the BG community. The Ice Horizons, the National Tractor Pull, and the Ohio-Ontario Games all benefited from their commitment to community involvement. Dick was a member of the Presbyterian Church and served for 15 years as a Deacon.
He was actively involved in the Bowling Green Exchange Club, the Pi Kappa Fraternity Delta Beta Chapter, the Tontogany American Legion Post 0441, and the Maumee-BG Elks Lodge #1850. Dick was a charter member of the BGSU Falcon Club and the Bowling Green Blueliner Association. He loved being at the Ice Arena and considered many there to be his extended family. Dick coached youth hockey for 13 years, managed youth hockey travel teams, and served as an off-ice official for both BG High School Bobcat Hockey and BGSU Falcon Hockey for over 25 years.
In 1997, Dick was names BG’s Outstanding Male Citizen of the year.
Dick loved his family and could always be spotted at BG School events, Carter Park, and the Ice Arena cheering on his grandchildren and their friends. He is survived by his two sons, Eddie (Joy) Powers and Mike Powers, and daughter, Linda (Neil) Shearing as well as six grandchildren- Gabrielle, Brock, Blake, and Nick Powers and Nadia and Adam Shearing.
A Celebration of Life Service will be on Friday, June 23, 2017 beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Dunn Funeral Home located in Bowling Green’s Historical District at 408 W.
