Robert Alan Meyer passed away July 30, 2023. Robert (Bob) was born in Trenton, New Jersey to parents Anna Lilly Cecelia Anderson and Herman Dietrich Meyer. As the youngest of 4, Bob had some chores but also had the freedom to roam the town of Cranbury, New Jersey where he grew up. Bob’s father owned a milk delivery company, so Bob learned to drive early and helped gas up the family milk trucks.
Bob graduated from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1953. He worked a few jobs before finding his passion. In 1956, he began a long career with IBM just as the first commercial computers were being tested. IBM recruits attended training on these complex new machines, and Bob was intrigued from day one.
Bob joined IBM’s federal systems division in 1960 and moved to Rockville, Maryland. He managed programmers on many large government projects. One project for the Bank of Montreal involved moving to Toronto for two years. He retired in 1987.
Bob had an active retirement. He was an avid learner who was curious about a wide range of subjects including opera, woodworking, and technology. He also loved to travel domestically and internationally each year. One of his fondest memories was taking the entire family to Switzerland to celebrate his and Holly’s 50th wedding anniversary in 2001.
He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his 4 granddaughters and learning about their activities and studies. He always had lots of questions and was a great listener. He frequently commented on how all his granddaughters had grown up into such smart, capable young women.
Bob is survived by his children; Kevin Meyer, Penelope Evans-Meyer (James Evans), Clark Meyer (Jodie) granddaughters; Heidi Evans (Avery Bowron), Emily Evans, Anna Meyer (William Hardt), Cara Meyer and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob’s wife of 72 years, Holly Hopewell Meyer predeceased him on April 27, 2023. There will be a memorial service for both Holly and Bob on August 26 at 2pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville, 100 Welsh Park Drive, Rockville, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent (or forwarded by the family) to the TreeMendous Maryland Gift of Trees program to plant trees in Montgomery County.
