During February, love is in the air at the senior center. Join the Wood County Committee on Aging and our host; film buff Dr. John Blinn, as he presents a bi-weekly film series at the Wood County Senior Center.

Blinn’s selections, plucked from the Golden Age of Hollywood, include personal favorites and seldom-seen classics. Each film is introduced by Blinn, and following the viewing, enlightening discussion is welcome. The screenings are free of charge to individuals of all ages. Popcorn will be served.

The movies are:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. – “The Lost Valentine” (2011) starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Betty White and Sean Faris. The story follows the characters of a TV journalist, Susan Allison (Hewitt), working on a profile of a woman, Caroline Thomas (White), whose husband naval aviator Lt. Neil Thomas was declared MIA sixty years ago during World War II. Susan immediately clashes with Caroline’s grandson, Lucas Thomas (Faris), when he overhears her referring to the potential story as a fluff piece, rather than the very personal story it is, since she herself doubts if pure and true love exists. She apologizes, and manages to start the interview and starts spending time with both Caroline and Lucas. Her developing friendship with Lucas makes her have doubts about her relationship with her almost fiancé, Andrew Hawthorne, a photographer who is frequently absent overseas.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. – “Of Human Hearts” (1938) a drama starring Walter Huston, James Stewart, and Beulah Bondi (1940). Stewart plays a proud and ungrateful son who rebels against his preacher father and (after his father’s death) neglects his poverty-stricken mother. As a young man (James Stewart), Jason falls in love with beautiful Annie (Ann Rutherford). When Jason’s father takes him circuit riding, Jason rebels at the bad food and awful living conditions, and has a fistfight with his father. This ruptures their relationship. Jason goes to medical school, and becomes a doctor. He is increasingly neglectful of his parents, and when his father dies, he arrives too late to speak with him one last time. Despite his mother’s poverty, Jason repeatedly asks her for money, forcing her to sell her silver spoons, and eventually her wedding band, for food. The American Civil War breaks out, and she must sell Jason’s beloved horse Pilgrim to pay for his fancy $70 officer’s uniform. When Jason fails to write to her for two years, Mrs. Wilkins assumes that he is dead and writes a letter to President Abraham Lincoln (John Carradine) asking for information in locating his grave. Lincoln
issues an order requiring the young captain to appear before him without delay.

The series commences at 1 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month, at the Wood County Senior Center, 315 N. Main St., Bowling Green.
