Senior Resource Network hosts ‘Shifting Perspectives’ to honor Older Americans Month

In recognition of Older Americans Month, the Senior Resource Network hosted an event titled “Shifting Perspectives.” This event aimed to challenge stereotypes about aging and amplify the voices of older adults in the community.

“Shifting Perspectives” featured six older adults who shared their personal reflections. Among them was Nancy Orel, retired gerontology professor from Bowling Green State University, who served as moderator and guided the conversation.

Speakers called on the audience to move past ageist assumptions and see seniors as individuals with rich lives and continued contributions. One speaker began by urging, “Consider us as people, individuals — not just old people.”

Another added, “Remember that we have lots to offer: experience, knowledge, and wisdom.”

Addressing the topic of technology, one participant noted, “Everything computers do now, we did on paper. Be patient with us.”

One moment came from a 95-year-old woman who shared, “One by one, you lose the people on your wavelength,” a reminder of the emotional realities that come with aging.

The discussion also reframed the concept of independence. One speaker remarked, “Recognizing when you need someone to do something for you — that’s not losing independence. That’s making a decision. Many younger people pay for services like housekeeping or yard work. Independence means choosing what supports your life.”

The event served as both a celebration of the voices of older adults and a call to action: “to listen more closely, support more meaningfully, and shift our perspectives on aging.”

Senior Resource Network aims to promote connection, understanding, and advocacy for seniors throughout Northwest Ohio.
