A “Stop the Violence” event is being planned in Bowling Green later this month. Everyone is invited to attend “Mourning Song: A Gathering to Honor Victims of Violent Crimes.”

This will be an artistic collaboration of music, story, poetry and art sponsored by Tontogany Presbyterian Church, Maumee Valley Presbytery, and Torrance Sound.  The event is at the Wooster Green on Sept. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Lawn chairs are welcome and food will be available.

Local residents are also being reminded to RSVP for Not In Our Town’s “Community Conversation Series.”

The purpose of this series is to provide participants with opportunities for new learning and increased awareness about the topics of social justice, allyship, bias, prejudice, and bigotry, while reinforcing the NIOT core values of respect, inclusion, and safety for all. Following are the events planned:

  • Doing Diversity While Being White; Thursday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m., presented by Dr. Jolie Sheffer.  Learn to be an ally and how to stand in unity with people even though you may not have had similar life experiences.  Location: Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities Conference Room, 1921 E. Gypsy Lane Road, Bowling Green.
  • Recognizing and Dealing with Unconscious Bias (Implicit and Explicit); Thursday, Oct. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m., presented by The Employers’ Association. Biases?  We all have them. Learn strategies to recognize and reduce unconscious bias. Location: Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities Conference Room, 1921 E. Gypsy Lane Road, Bowling Green.
  • Promote Peace and Eliminate Hate!  This is the NIOT theme for the entire month of  November. There will be a variety of activities including the NIOT BG annual Peace March on Nov.  6 and United Against Hate Week Nov. 17-22. Watch for details.
