Summer STARS Program open for children

(Submitted by Wood County Educational Service Center)

The Community Learning Centers of the Wood County Educational Service Center has officially kicked off the Summer 2018 STARS Program with the opening of our Genoa, North Baltimore, and Bowling Green-Crim sites. The remaining five site locations will open within the next week.

We are taking students on a journey through the eras, with a summer theme of “Back to the Future.” Students will jump back in time to the days of the Pioneers and Aztecs, but will also create a time machine to travel to the future.

Summer STARS gives students the opportunity to go on field trips every Tuesday, and swimming every Friday. Field trips this year include Sauder Village, Fort Meigs, the Wood County Fair, Rutherford B. Hayes Museum, the Toledo Zoo, and more. We also provide various enrichment programs, including visits from local libraries, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, the Red Cross Pillowcase Project, and the Wood County Historical Center.

Other daily activities include Challenge Centers, which engage students in sequenced, progressive activities designed to build increased understanding, skills, and accomplishments in eight content areas: Arts, Cultural Studies / Global Learning, Health and Safety, Math / Problem Solving, Motor Skills, Reading / Writing, Science, Service Projects/Learning and Character Building. SuccessMaker is an online reading and math intervention tool to gauge a student’s growth over the course of a year. The Community Learning Centers utilize SuccessMaker twice a day in the summer to ensure that students are not losing skills throughout the summer. Students will also participate in our OneBook CLC literacy initiative, in which all eight sites will read the BFG simultaneously and complete a set of curriculum.

The Community Learning Centers of the Wood County Educational Service Center provide quality enrichment and extended learning activities for elementary children – grades K-5. Our daily before-school, after-school, and summer STARS programs meet the care and supervision needs of parents during out-of-school hours, while engaging children in fun learning experiences that complement their school-day instruction. Summer STARS hours are from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, the entire summer!

Site locations include: Bowling Green-Crim, Eastwood, Elmwood, Genoa, North Baltimore, Northwood, Rossford-Eagle Point, and Woodmore. A generous sliding-fee/scholarship schedule is used to make the program very affordable for ALL families. Help your child be a STAR – ENROLL YOUR CHILD TODAY!
