Suspect escapes on foot after crashing stolen Dodge Charger

A stolen car chase ended early this morning with a crash on Interstate 75 and the suspect escaping on foot.

A cleaning person at the Buick-GMC dealership on North Main Street called Bowling Green Police Division around 11:47 p.m. Sunday to report that an orange Dodge Charger was being broken into in the lot.

Police arrived at the scene just as the car was leaving the dealership’s lot, and a pursuit ensued.

“The Charger took off northbound,” Police Lt. Mike Bengela said this morning. The pursuit on Ohio 25 reached speeds of 130 mph, and the BG police vehicle stopped the chase.

“Our Ford Explorers are not going to keep up with a Charger,” Bengela said.

The Charger turned east on Ohio 582, and the Ohio State Patrol picked up the pursuit. The  chase continued east on Route 582, north on Ohio 199, then eventually went from Ohio 795 to southbound I-75.

Ohio State Patrol Lt. Angel Burgos said this morning that the pursuit by troopers and by Perrysburg Township Police was terminated due to excessive speeds.

Just north of Bowling Green on I-75, at 12:13 this morning, the suspect reportedly struck a trailer carrying a car being towed by another vehicle. No one in that vehicle was injured, according to Burgos.

The Charger rolled over, and the suspect took off running, according to Bengela.

“We used our K-9 to try to track him,” Bengela said. And the Wood County Sheriff’s Office put up its drone to try to locate the suspect.

State patrol aviation was unable to respond due to the weather, Burgos said.

“Unfortunately we were unable to locate this person,” he said.

Some evidence was reportedly found in the crashed Charger, so police are hoping that leads to the identity of the driver, Bengela said.
