Two Bobcat soccer players make coaches’ senior squads

Bobcat soccer players in All-District senior squad game

Two Bowling Green High School soccer players have been named to the 2022 All-District senior squads by the Northwest Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association.

Macy Ash, a senior midfielder, and Mathias Drumm, a senior forward, will play in the 20th annual Senior All-District Games on Sunday (11/13).

Ash, who had seven goals and seven assists in the 2022 season, will play on the girl’s blue team.

Drumm, who had 17 goals and 10 assists for the season, will play on the boy’s white team.

Kassie Memmer, the girls coach at Toledo Central Catholic and a BGHS graduate and former soccer player, is one of the coaches for the girl’s blue team.

The girl’s game will begin at 1 p.m. followed by the boy’s game at 3 p.m. at Liberty Benton High School’s Turf Stadium, 9190 County Road 9, Findlay, Ohio. BCSN will be broadcasting the games.

Bowling Green boys soccer lost in the Division 2 Regional Semifinal, Region 6, to Richfield Revere, 2-0 on Wednesday (11/2).

The Richfield Revere goal scorer was Ryan Hodgson.

Bowling Green Bobcat Boys Cross Country

Bowling Green Bobcat Aidan Novinsky qualified for the state cross country championship by placing seventh in the Division 1 regional boys championship Saturday (10/29) at Tiffin. He finished in 16:12.5.

Bowling Green’s boys team placed fourth overall with 102 points. The top two teams – Toledo St. Francis, first with 35 points, and Anthony Wayne, second with 53 points – qualified for state.

Perrysburg’s boys placed third with 79 points. Ashland, Lexington and Findlay rounded out the top seven team places.

Other Bobcat runners for the boys team were Evan Romero (16:57.5), Sam Challu (17:00), Ash Fleming (17:14.6), Landon Fry (17:39.8) and Shawn Carney (18:44.2).

The top two teams and top eight individuals qualified for the state meet, which is Saturday (11/5) at Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park south of Columbus.

BG Bobcat Girls Cross Country

Annie Oberlander led the Bowling Green High School girls cross country team, finishing 12th in 19:59.9 at the District 1 regional girls championship in Tiffin on Saturday (10/29). Averie Crawford was 14th finishing in 20:19.7

The Bobcats girls team placed fourth. Perrysburg girls were first with five of the top eight individuals, led by Ava Beeks, first (18:30.2); Natalie Sanders, second (18:41.2) Hannah Kersten, third (19:03.4); Sage Colon, fifth (19:22.4); and AnnaSophia Gowern, sixth (19:23.3).

Rounding out the top seven teams were Toledo Notre Dame Academy, second; Columbian, third; Sylvania Southview, fifth; St Ursula Academy, sixth; and Fremont Ross, seventh. The top two teams and top eight individuals will compete in the state championship Saturday (11/5).

Other Bowling Green runners were Shelby Janes (21:30.6), Natalie Neeson (21:45) and Ava Kenyon (22:24.2), Londyn Thompson (22:58) and Ava Peper (23:06.8).

Bobcat boys soccer beat Delta, 1-0, in the Division 2, Region 6, District Championship on Thursday (10/27).

The Bowling Green goal scorer was Mathias Drumm.

Bobcat boys soccer beat Maumee, 3-0, in the Division 2, Region 6 District Semi-Final on Monday (10/24).

Bobcat cross country

The Bowling Green High School Boys and Girls Cross Country teams both advanced to the Regional Meet after placing second and fourth Saturday in the Division 1 District Meet at Leaders Farms in Napoleon.

The boys team was the runner-up in the district meet, led by Aidan Novinsky (16:23) in fourth place. Erek Kendrick (16:40) was eighth; Sam Challu (16:53), 12th; Ash Fleming (17:00), 15th; Landon Fry (17:27), 27th; Evan Romero (18:20), 37th; and Garrett Bateson (18:44), 42nd.

The girls team finished fourth to advance to the regional meet. Averie Crawford led the Bobcats, placing ninth with a time of 20:10. Also finishing were Annie Oberlander (20:37), 15th; Shelby Janes (22:09), 33rd; Natalie Neeson (22:35), 39th; Ava Peper (22:36), 41st; Londyn Thompson (22:45), 43rd; and Lizzie Amspoker (23:09), 49th.

The top three boys teams and top four girls teams advance to the Regional Meet at Hedges Boyer Park in Tiffin on Saturday (10/29). In addition to Bowling Green, the teams competing at the regional meet are Anthony Wayne, Ashland, Findlay, Lexington, Perrysburg and Toledo St. Francis.

Bowling Green and Perrysburg are the only two Division 1 programs to advance both the boys and girls teams to the regional meet. The top two teams and top eight individuals in the region will advance to the state meet Nov. 5 in Columbus.

BG football

The Napoleon Wildcats football team scored on a 25-yard pass from Owen Espinoza to Andrew Williams in the fourth quarter at Bobcat Stadium Friday (10/21) night to defeat the Bowling Green Bobcats 21-13 in the final game of the regular season.

Bowling Green came within one point, 13-14, in the third quarter when Kadin Shank’s three-yard pass was caught by AJ Clemens. Napoleon blocked the extra point attempt by Sydney Maas.

Shank ran for a seven-yard touchdown with 5:54 left in the second quarter. Maas converted on the extra point kick.

Shank was 11-of-19 passes for 145 yards. Brock Hastings had two catches for 42 yards. Evan Brandt caught three passes for 33 yards. Clemens had two catches for 31 yards. Ashton Studer caught two passes for 22 yards, and Ja’ceous Shannon had two catches for 17 yards.

Peyton Harris rushed for 41 yards on 15 carries. Studer had 29 yards on five carries. Shannon ran for 14 yards on two carries and Reece Rath gained four yards on one carry.

The Bobcats had 295 total yards and 17 first downs. They end the season 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the Northern Lakes League.

Bobcat cross country

The Bowling Green High School Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams placed third in Saturday’s (10/15) Northern Lakes League cross country meet at Whiteford Valley Golf Course.

The Anthony Wayne and Perrysburg boys teams were first and second with 37 and 45 points, respectively. Bowling Green had 75 points.

Leading for the Bobcats was junior Aidan Novinsky who broke 16:00 to finish in second place. His race earned him First Team All-League honors.  Erek Kendrick earned Second Team All-League honors for his ninth-place finish and Third Team All-NLL honors went to Sam Challu who finished 18th and Evan Romero who finished 21st. Freshman Landon Fry rounded out BG’s top five boys with a 25th place finish in the race of 56 runners.

The Perrysburg girls defended their team title and won with 16 points.

For the Bobcat girls, sophomores Annie Oberlander and Averie Crawford were ninth and 10th, respectively, to earn Second Team All-League honors. Sophomore Natalie Neeson finished 20th earning her 3rd Team All-NLL honors.  Rounding out Bowling Green’s top five were Shelby Janes (26th), Lizzie Amspoker (35th) and Ava Peper (39th).

Bowling Green High School varsity football beat Maumee, 24-7, Friday night at Maumee (10/14).

The Bobcats scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, with Evan Brandt completing a 5-yard pass to Brock Hastings, and later with Reece Rath making a 3-yard run to score.

Sydney Maas followed up with two good kicks.

In the second quarter, BG got another touchdown with Jackson Shafer scoring on a 1-yard run, followed by a good kick from Maas. 

Maas also completed a 29-yard field goal.

Throughout the game, Evan Brandt ran 32 yards, Ja’ceous Shannon ran 41 yards, Ashton Studer ran 43 yards, Reece Rath ran 36 yards, Peyton Harris ran 114 yards and Jackson Shafer ran 61 yards.

Evan Brandt completed six passes for 75 yards. Ashton Studer received one pass for 34 yards, Brock Hastings received four passes with a total of 32 yards, and Reece Rath received one pass for 9 yards.

BGHS football (10/7)

Bowling Green Bobcat’s Evan Brandt scored two touchdowns Friday night against host Southview, but the Cougars stopped BG’s two-point conversion attempt in the last seconds of the game to win 14-13.

Brandt was the first to score on a one-yard run with 6:56 left in the half, and a successful extra point by Sydney Maas put the Bobcats up 7-0. With 2:48 remaining in the half, the Cougars scored on a two-yard run by Isaac Sexton and good kick by Logan Howe to tie the game 7-7 at the half.

A 22-yard pass from Southview’s Avery Offenburg to Emite Lamb and Howe’s extra point in the third quarter put the Cougars ahead 14-7.

Brandt’s second touchdown was a two-yard run to bring the Bobcats to within one, 14-13, with six seconds remaining in the game. He also completed 4-of-5 passes for 39 yards.

Kadin Shank was 4-of-6 passes for 36 yards. Jackson Shafer led the Bobcats in rushing with 42 yards on 14 carries. Reece Rath carried the ball eight times for 26 yards. Ashton Studer had 18 yards on four carries and Brandt had 10 yards on 11 carries.

Ashton Studer had four catches for 16 yards. Nate Kress caught a 24-yard pass and Rath had a 19-yard catch. Brandt caught two passes for 16 yards.

Bowling Green had 174 total yards and 11 first downs.

The Bobcats are 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Northern Lakes League. They play Friday (10/14) at Maumee at 7 p.m.

BGHS Varsity Football (9/30)

The Bowling Green High School varsity football team had a strong first half Friday night, going into the locker room with a 14-3 lead against Northern Lakes League opponent Northview. The Wildcats scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to defeat the Bobcats 24-21 at Bobcat Stadium.

Bobcat quarterback Kadin Shank threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns, a 75-yard pass to Brock Hastings and an eight-yard pass to Evan Brandt. Shank was 14-of-24 passing.

Peyton Harris ran for 102 yards on 11 carries with a 46-yard touchdown for the Bobcats. Sydney Maas was good on three extra point attempts.

Bowling Green had a total of 347 yards and 15 first downs.

The Bobcats are 2-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Their next game is Friday (10/7) at Sylvania Southview.

The Bowling Green High School Girls Tennis Team placed fourth in the Northern Lakes League Girls Tennis Tournament with 26 points. Anthony Wayne won the event with 62 points.

Two Bobcats placed third in their flights. Julia Barnett defeated Perrysburg’s Allison Barry 6-1, 7-6 (4) in second singles. Sarah Mathey won over Northview’s Dipakshi Pal 6- 3, 6-2 in third singles.

Also for Bowling Green, Libby Barnett was fourth in first singles, falling to Perrysburg’s Penelope Giammarco 6-4, 6-2.

Two of the Bobcats’ doubles teams also placed fourth. Bowling Green’s first doubles team of Audrey Geyman and Hannah Mathey lost to Northview 6-3, 7-6 (5). Northview’s second doubles team won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 over Bobcats Audrey Nester and Audra Hammer.

The Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams competed at the Liberty Center Cross Country Extravaganza at Leaders Farms in Napoleon on Saturday (9/24).  On a course that features two creek crossings the boys finished second of 16 teams.  Anthony Wayne won the race with 40 points and BG had 69.

BGHS Cross Country results 9/17

The Bowling Green High School Boys and Girls Varsity Cross Country teams placed fifth at the Dave’s Invitational hosted by St. Francis de Sales Saturday (9/17) at the Ottawa Park Golf Course.

St. Francis won the boys varsity event scoring 57 points. The Bobcat boys scored 116 points to place fifth of 16 teams. Out of a total of 143 runners, the top seven finishers for Bowling Green were:

BGHS Football vs. Springfield

HOLLAND, Ohio —The Bowling Green High School varsity football team improved on the season in a game Friday night (9/16) against Springfield.

The Bobcats racked up 271 total yards and 15 first downs on the way to a 28-20 win over the Blue Devils.

Bowling Green’s Peyton Harris rushed for 188 yards and scored three touchdowns including a seven-yard run in the second quarter, a 10-yard run in the third quarter and a five-yard run in the fourth quarter. Ja’ceous Shannon also scored in the fourth quarter on a six-yard run. Kadin Shank carried the ball four times for 10 yards and was 3-of-13 passing for 55 yards. Reece Rath advanced the ball eight yards on one play. Brock Hastings and Jackson Shafer gained five

yards and one yard, respectively. Evan Brandt led the tam in receiving, catching two passes for 44 yards. Ashton Studer had a catch for 11 yards.

Kicker Sydney Maas was successful on all four extra point attempts.

BG is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Lakes League. The Bobcats play a home game at 7 p.m. Friday (9/23) against the Anthony Wayne Generals.

BGHS Boys Soccer vs. Oak Harbor

The Bowling Green High School boys soccer team shut out Oak Harbor 10-0 on Saturday (9/17).

Leading scorers for the Bobcats were Cole Ash, Luca Brininger and Jonas Kendrick, who each had two goals. Scoring a goal each were Ethan Decker, Mathias Drumm, Jack Hover and Tomas Meek. Goalie Joey Hover had a clean sheet, holding Oak Harbor scoreless.

The Bobcats, who are 3-3-2 overall, play at 7 p.m. Tuesday (9/20) at Maumee.

BGHS Volleyball vs. Whitmer

The Bowling Green High School volleyball teams came up with three wins Saturday (9/17) against Whitmer.

The varsity team won 3-0 with scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-15. Bowling Green’s Talia Twigg had seven kills and three digs. Madison Cowan had seven kills and 15 digs. Jamie Sayen recorded four kills, two solo blocks, two block assists and six digs. Abigail Slembarski contributed three kills, six aces, five digs and 16 assists.

The junior varsity team won two of the three games with scores of 19-25, 25-19 and 25-22. For Bowling Green, Anne Konecny had six kills, three solo blocks and six block assists; Marley Camera had six kills, two block assists and two digs; Alyssa Roberts had 16 digs and one ace; and Sophie Shepherd had four kills, 12 digs and nine assists.

The freshman team won two games with sores of 25-11 and 25-10. Julia Strum had five kills, two solo blocks and five digs. Kiersten Hendricks recorded three kills and three solo blocks. Molly Boblitt contributed one kill and 14 assists.

The Bobcats have a home match Monday against Maumee.

In the closest match of the day at first doubles, Audrey Geyman/ Hannah Mathey were able to hold on in the first set in order to get to the tie-breaker.  In the tie-breaker BG jumped out to a 4-0 lead but Clay stormed back on a couple of unforced errors to take a 6-4 lead.  BG was able to put a couple of balls away at the net  and make a big serve to get it to 7-6.  After another BG unforced error, BG was able to string 2 points together to win the set 9-7. In the second set BG was trying to be more aggressive at the net and win points earlier.  The strategy worked as they were able to hang on and win the second set 6-3. All four players played well and were aggressive at the net which made for an entertaining match.

BGHS Cross Country

The Bowling Green High School cross country teams participated in 53rd Tiffin Cross
Country Carnival on Saturday, (9/10).

The Bobcat girls team placed third of 16 teams in the Division 1-B Varsity race behind
first place Toledo St. Ursula Academy (65 points) and second place Perrysburg (68
points). With a total of 81 points, the top five Bobcat finishers were (4) Averie Crawford,
20:47.2; (6) Annie Oberlander, 21:00.8; (17) Ava Peper, 22:29.3 9, (19) Shelby Janes,
22:53.9; and (39) Natalie Neeson, 23.46.9.

The Bobcat boys team ran in the Division 1-A Varsity race, which is one of the most
competitive races in the state.  BG head coach Patrick Carney said, “They finished a
very respectable 14th of 29 teams. This race featured nine state-ranked Division 1 cross
country teams.”

The top five area teams were (1) Toledo St. Francis, 97 points; (4) Perrysburg, 209
points; (6) Anthony Wayne, 216 points; (14) Bowling Green, 364; (27) Toledo St. John’s
Jesuit, 713.

The top finishers for Bowling Green were (25) Aidan Novinsky, 16:35.6; (62) Evan
Romero, 17:12.2; (70) Erek Kendrick, 17:22.2; (103) Landon Fry, 17:54.0; and (104)
Kieran Percival, 17:54.8.

BGHS Varsity Football

The Bowling Green High School football team lost the first conference game of the season to Perrysburg at Steinecker Stadium Friday night (9/9).

The Bobcats were tied 7-7 in the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets scored five additional touchdowns in the first half to lead 42-7 at halftime. Both teams scored in the fourth quarter and Perrysburg went on to win 49-13.

The Bobcats had 246 total yards and 10 first downs. BG quarterback Kadin Shank was 6-of-17 passing for 91 yards and scored a touchdown on a seven-yard run in the first quarter. Kicker Sydney Maas was successful on the extra point.

Peyton Harris had 84 yards on 15 carries. Jackson Shafer had 23 yards on three carries.

Ja’ceous Shannon had five yards on four carries and Bryce Oberlander had four yards on one carry.

Brock Hastings caught three passes for 78 yards to lead the team in receiving. Joey Kline caught a pass for 15 yards. Evan Brandt caught three passes for 13 yards and Karter Shank caught a pass for six yards.

Jameson Horst completed a 10-yard pass to Bryce Oberlander for the final touchdown of the game as time ran out.

The Bobcats’ record is 1-3. They play at 7 p.m. Friday (9/16) against the Springfield Blue Devils at Springfield.

BG Bobcat Varsity Football

The Bowling Green Bobcat football team scored three touchdowns in the third and fourth
quarters of Friday (9/2) night’s football game against the Findlay Trojans. They were within one
possession until Findlay quarterback Ryan Montgomery threw two touchdown passes within the
final four minutes of the game.
Findlay won the game at Bobcat Stadium 35-19.
The Bobcats had 297 total yards and 15 first downs. BG quarterback Kadin Shank was 12 of 25
passes for 156 yards including a five-yard pass to Ja’ceous Shannon for a touchdown. He also
had two interceptions.
Peyton Harris had 96 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. Shank rushed for 30 yards on
10 carries and Shannon had seven carries for 26 yards.
Brock Hastings led the team on receiving, catching four passes for 74 yards. Shannon had three
catches for 44 yards, Ashton Studer had two catches for 21 yards and Evan Brandt had three
catches for 17 yards.
The Bobcats scored when Shank threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Shannon, and Harris
completed with a 12-yard run and a three-yard run. Kicker Sydney Mass was successful on two
of three extra point attempts.
The Bobcats fall to 1-2 on the season. They play their first conference game at 7 p.m. Friday
(9/9) against the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets at Perrysburg.

BGHS Varsity Volleyball beats Otsego

The Bowling Green Bobcat varsity volleyball team defeated Otsego 3-1 in an away game on Saturday.

The Bobcats won with scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-15 and 25-17.

BG’s Madison Cowan had 10 kills, three aces, 16 digs and one assist. Francesca Meek had one kill, two aces and 23 digs. Abigail Slembarski had two kills, three aces, 11 digs and 25 assists. Macyn Dean-Scheele added four kills, two blocks and one dig.

The Bobcats host Sylvania Southview on Tuesday in the first league match of the season.

BGHS JV Volleyball post win over Otsego

The Bowling Green High School junior varsity volleyball team won 2-1 against the Otsego Knights on Saturday.

The Bobcats won with scores of 21-25, 25-20 and 25-20.

BG’s Ruby Suter led the team with five kills, two solo blocks, three block assists, four aces, and five digs.

Hannah Yarger had one kill, one assist, one ace and 21 digs. Molly Ruthenberg contributed one kill, nine assists and four digs. Sophie Shepherd had two kills, eight assists, six aces and 14 digs.

Bobcat Freshman Volleyball falls to Otsego

The Otsego Freshman volleyball team defeated the Bowling Green Bobcats 2-1. The Knights won with scores of 16-25, 23-25 and 25-13.

BG’s Julia Strum led the team with eight kills, one ace and 10 digs. Molly Boblitt had 13 assists. Kendall Heinze recorded four kills and 14 digs, and Caroline Baker had three aces and four digs.

BGHS cross country teams place 2nd and 4th at Fremont meet

The Bowling Green boys cross country team placed second behind Anthony Wayne out of 14 teams in Saturday’s Norm Bray Cross Country Invitational. They also won the 5K open race. The girls finished fourth out of 13 teams.

The meet was hosted by Fremont Ross High School at Walsh Park.

The BGHS runners who contributed to the Bobcat boys’ 64 points were 2) Aidan Novinsky, 16:26.6; 9) Evan Romero, 17:30.6; 10) Erik Kendrick, 17:40.1; 16) Kirby Bucks, 18:14.6; 27) Tyler Thompson, 18:24.0. Also in finishing places were 28) Sam Challu, 18:30.5, and 34) Landon Fry, 18:45.1.

The Bobcat boys also won the open race scoring 24 points, led by Kieran Percival who placed second with a time of 19:03.8 and including 4) Liam Triggs, 19:32.8; 5) Aidan Meyer, 19:35.3; 6) Sam Lammers, 19:56.5; and 7) Xavier Scott, 20:05.8. Also finishing were 10) Jaxson Windom, 20:17.1, and 12) Ash Fleming, 20:42.8.

The Bobcat girls team scored 96 points behind Eastwood with 40 points, Whitmer with 79 points and Anthony Wayne with 82 points.

Finishing placers for BG included 6) Annie Oberlander, 21:08.0; 7) Averie Crawford, 21:15.2; 16) Ava Peper, 22:37.7; 34) Shelby Janes, 23:46.1; and 40) Natalie Neeson, 23:58.2. Also finishing were 48) Lizzie Amspoker, 24:36.2, and 51) Londyn Thompson 24:39.5.

BGHS varsity football loses to Eastwood 28-0

After a strong showing last week, the Bowling Green Bobcat football team fell to the Eastwood Eagles Friday night.

Eastwood won 28-0, scoring in three of the four quarters, and held the Bobcats to 115 total yards and eight first downs.

Eastwood’s Kaiden Sanchez caught a 23-yard Case Boos pass to put Eastwood on the board in the second quarter. Boos scored twice in the third quarter on a six-yard run and a 16-yard run. Bryce Defalco scored on a one-yard run to close out the fourth quarter. Kicker Robby Rothenbuhler was successful on all four extra points.

Bowling Green’s Peyton Harris led the Bobcats in rushing yards, gaining 20 yards in 23 attempts. Kadin Shank was 12-of-28 on passes for a total of 95 yards. Brock Hastings caught five passes for 45 yards, and Evan Brandt caught five passes for 36 yards.

The Bobcats play a non-conference home game at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 against the Findlay Trojans.

BGHS Football defeats Lake 35-0
The Bowling Green Bobcat football team had a good start during the season opener Friday, scoring at least one touchdown in each quarter to defeat Lake 35-0.

The Bobcats combined for 433 total yards, with 244 rushing and 189 passing. Quarterback Kadin Shank completed 9 of 15 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns. He threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Ja’ceous Shannon and a 48-yard touchdown pass to Ashton Studer. Studer, who rushed for 52 yards on three attempts, also scored on a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Peyton Harris, who ran 58 yards on 12 attempts, scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter. Bryce Oberlander scored on a nine-yard run in the second quarter. Kicker Sydney Maas was good on all five extra points.

The Bobcats play at 7 p.m. Saturday at Eastwood.

BGHS Boys Varsity Soccer wins against Eastwood 12-0
The Bowling Green Bobcat varsity soccer team won 12-0 against the Eastwood Eagles in a home non-conference game Saturday.

Bobcats Cole Ash and Tomas Meek each scored three goals. Mathias Drumm added two goals and Alec Ross, Jackson Triggs, Jonas Kendrick and Jack Hover each scored a goal.

The Bobcats’ next game is at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against the Clay Eagles.

The Blue Streaks won 3-2 with scores of 14-25, 25-22, 26-28, 25-20 and 15-12. Bowling Green’s Madison Cowan had 19 kills, one ace and 15 digs. Talia Twigg had 15 kills, one block, one block assist and one dig. Abigail Slembarski contributed 47 assists, two aces and 17 digs. Francesca Meek had 29 digs and one kill.

The Bobcats play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Otsego.

The Bowling Green Bobcat junior varsity volleyball team beat Archbold 2-0, scoring 25-16 and 25-19. Anne Konecny had three kills and one block. Kendall Heinze had two assists, two aces and nine digs, while Sophie Shepherd recorded two kills, 10 assists, two digs and two aces.
