University Women of BGSU will hold their annual holiday party at the home of Dr. Roger and Barbara Sanchez on the evening of Friday Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m.
This evening of food, entertainment and fellowship is one of the main events of UW’s annual calendar. Live holiday music will be provided by Joe Baker and Bob Manley. University Women’s group the “TOOTs” (the out of tuners) led by Jo Ascunce will also perform.
The holiday event is also a way to help families in need. This year UW members will “adopt” five families who have been recommended by the Salvation Army for their annual Holiday Basket project. Anne Bullerjahn, UW’s community service chairman, and her committee will deliver the food, wrapped presents and books for the children in the five families. Monetary gifts can be brought to the Sanchez home on the night of the party or can be mailed directly to Anne Bullerjahn.
In addition to the Holiday Basket project, UW gave three $2,000 scholarships to non-traditional students at BGSU. The scholarships were presented by Mary Lynn Pozniak, chairman of the scholarship committee, at the annual Fall Brunch in August.
The first recipient was Lily Mominee, a senior who lives in Oregon, Ohio. Lily is a math education major with a minor in psychology. She is a mother of two young children and hopes to teach in the Toledo area at the high school level. She is a member of several math organizations and volunteers at BGSU Math Camps.
The second recipient was Melinda Smith. Melinda is also a senior who lives in Fremont. Her major is Middle Childhood Education, Science and Language Arts. She works part time at the Sandusky County Public Health Department and has a son who will be entering kindergarten next fall. Her long time goal is to get a PhD in educational leadership.
The last recipient was Megan Hahn who is a junior and lives in Defiance. She is majoring in Integrated Social Studies Education. Megan has two part time jobs including being a coordinator at Posteman Insurance and Investments and an attendant at Wauseon Rollercade and Events Center. Megan is a single mother who hopes to teach in grades 7-12 in social studies in her hometown of Defiance.
Leading University Women this year (2022-23) is President Ann Otley.
