Welcome BG has announced “Belonging Begins With Us – Solidarity, Community and Celebration,” kicking off the Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May. The event will be a virtual community discussion on April 20, from 7 to 8:30 pm.
Welcome Bowling Green will hold this community discussion to:
- Express solidarity and stand with Asians in the Bowling Green community and BGSU
- Celebrate the richness and contribution of Asians – highlighting their roles as a counterpoint to recent anti-Asian sentiment
- The role of the Bowling Green community to take a stance, hold each other accountable and challenge the popular misconceptions associated with Asians, people of color and diverse backgrounds
- Define and instill “belonging”
The event will include a panel of speakers including Khani Begum, PhD (associate professor, BGSU); Vibha Bhalla, PhD (associate professor, BGSU); Louisa Ha, PhD (professor, BGSU); and Molly Hilligoss, Senior Regional Manager, Welcoming America.
Mayor Mike Aspacher will deliver remarks.
The event is open to the public and a Zoom link is available on Welcome BG’s facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/welcomebgoh.
Welcome BG is the city’s initiative to develop and promote Bowling Green as a safe, welcoming and inclusive community for everyone including immigrants, new Americans and people of diverse backgrounds. We embrace that immigrants create a vibrant culture in our community, making our neighborhoods stronger where we can all thrive. In addition to bringing cultural diversity, immigrants contribute to economic growth and bring new innovation to Bowling Green at the time where our region is in critical need of both skilled and non-skilled workers.
