Weston man in pickup truck being towed dies when truck overturns in ditch south of BG

On Sunday (March 3) around 7:30 p.m., the Wood County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a single vehicle crash at Ohio 281 and Solether Road, south of Bowling Green, which resulted in a single fatality.

The crash involved a red 2005 Dodge pickup operated by Timothy Workman, of Fostoria, that was towing a 1994 GMC pickup with a tow strap.

The investigation showed that the vehicles were traveling eastbound on Route 281, and turned onto northbound Solether Road at a slow rate of speed. The GMC pickup truck traveled off the right side of the road into a ditch and overturned.

The occupant of the towed vehicle, 78-year-old Alva Barnes, of Weston, was partially ejected from the passenger side of the truck and became entrapped underneath the partially overturned truck. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS. Impairment is not suspected.

Assisting on location were Mid-County EMS, Central-Joint Fire District, Mercy Life Flight, Ohio Department of Transportation, and Franks’ Towing.

The incident is still under investigation.
