The National Weather Service has placed Wood County in the “Slight Risk” category for severe weather beginning tonight into early Saturday morning.
Local residents can expect the chance of showers to begin around 5 p.m. today into Saturday morning. There is a chance of thunderstorms starting near 10 p.m., but the most severe weather is expected closer to 2-3 a.m. Damaging winds up to 60 mph will be the main threat and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Nighttime severe weather is always a concern as most people will be sleeping and visibility should a tornado form is almost impossible.
With the high winds the chance for down trees and power lines is a possibility. To prepare, make sure all loose items are secured outdoors (especially inflatables and other seasonal decorations), flashlights are accessible with working batteries, and cell phones are charged with weather alerts active. Consider switching phones typically on vibrate or do not disturb to audible alerts when questionable weather is possible.
Always have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and if you have not already done so, here is the link to sign up for CodeRed https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/en-US/BFAB7B074BCD .
The Wood County EMA will continue to monitor and provide updates as appropriate.
