Following is a list of events planned for November by the Wood County Park District.
Night Climb Bouldering, Friday, Nov. 3, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Sawyer Quarry Nature Preserve, 26940 Lime City Road, Perrysburg. Bring a headlamp for this adventure under the moonlight. Staff share knowledge, tips, and tricks to get beginners climbing safely in this ever-challenging outdoor sport. Crash pads for safe landing and limited chalk supplied. Heritage Farm Demonstration, Saturday, Nov. 4, from 1 – 4 p.m., Carter Historic Farm, 18331 Carter Road, Bowling Green. Stop by any time during the afternoon the first Saturday of each month to see staff and volunteers in action working on the farm.Each month’s activity is dependent upon the season’s progress, so themes are subject to substitution. Project Feederwatch Bird Monitoring, Saturday, Nov. 4; from 10 – 11:30 a.m., W.W. Knight Nature Preserve: Friends’ Green Room, 29530 White Road, Perrysburg. Join citizen scientists around the world in counting wintering birds. Enjoy a presentation about how to identify and count the birds which is followed by a practice session at the feeders. CPR Certification at the Park, Saturday, Nov. 4; from 8 a.m. – noon and 1 – 5 p.m., Bradner Preserve, 11491 Fostoria Road, Bradner. Get certified in adult, child, and infant CPR and AED use and learn choking relief. This American Heart Association course is taught by certified Park District staff. Participants must be 14 years of age. Registration deadline is Oct. 28. Card certification cost: $5
Invertebrates and Climate Change, Tuesday, Nov. 7; from 7 – 8 p.m., Park District Headquarters, 18729 Mercer Road, Bowling Green. Learn about the response to climatic change of forest ants and what it could mean for other species affected by a warming climate. Food Preservation Series: Canned Cranberries, Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m., Carter Historic Farm, 18331 Carter Road, Bowling Green. Whether making a relish, jam or something else, cranberries are a great seasonal ingredient. Try a new recipe if an experienced canner, or learn the basics of hot bath canning if you’re new to it. Farm Chores: Lantern Making, Saturday, Nov. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m., Carter Historic Farm, 18331 Carter Road, Bowling Green. We’ll learn about the different ways people used to light their homes in the 1930s. We’ll look a bit closer at the different kinds of lanterns and lamps we have at the farm, and finish by crafting punch lanterns to take home. Bow-drill Workshop, Friday, Nov. 17; from 6 to 8 p.m., W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, 25930 White Road, Perrysburg. Build and test out your own bow-drill fire-starting kit. Learn about the evolution of fire-starting, which materials work best, and how to identify the best wood for the job. Wood provided. Bring your own knife capable of substantial wood carving. Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Certification Program, Tuesday, Nov. 21; from 7 to 9 p.m., W.W. Knight Nature Preserve: Friends’ Green Room, 29530 White Road, Perrysburg. This informational session will explain the details of this excellent natural resources education program. Beginning in April, this certification program is coupled with community-based volunteer service. Sessions include many topics such as: birds, interpretation, ecology, native plants, mammals, insects, geology, and more! Certification co-sponsored by OSU extension. Intro to Rope Rappelling, Saturday, Nov. 18; 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Sawyer Quarry Nature Preserve, 26940 Lime City Road, Perrysburg. Come join us for a day of rope rappelling fun! A brief orientation session will cover the gear and safety procedures, then it’s off to our 25-35 foot cliffs. All safety equipment, instruction/guiding, and water will be provided, please bring a water bottle, sack lunch, and snacks. Participants must be 12 years of age or older. Closed-toed footwear only, access to the cliff tops requires a short hike on slightly uneven terrain. Cost: $15, Friends of the Parks members: $10.
