Wood County reports 67 new cases, 1 more death from COVID

Wood County is now up to 11,923 confirmed and probable cases and 209 deaths from COVID-19 since last March, according to the Thursday, March 18, update from the Wood County Health Department. That is 67 new cases and one more death since the last report on Monday, March 15.

The number of total COVID vaccines started in Wood County as of Thursday was 31,574 – which is 24.14% of the county’s population.

The number of active COVID cases in the county today is 96, which is 23 fewer than on Monday. Active cases are Wood County residents who are being monitored by the health department according to state and federal isolation criteria.

Of the total 209 deaths in Wood County, one was in her 20s, one was in his 30s, three were in their 40s, seven were in their 50s, 19 were in their 60s, 51 in their 70s, 78 in their 80s, and 47 in their 90s, and two in their 100s. 

A total of 585 local residents have been hospitalized for the coronavirus since last March, with two more being hospitalized since Monday. 

Of the total 11,923 cases in the county as of today, those with the virus ranged in age from 1 to 103, with the median age of 38. Of those testing positive, 6,246 were female, and 5,677 were male. 

Cases involving BGSU students and staff who live in surrounding counties and commute are included in BGSU figures, but not Wood County’s total count.

Every Thursday, the Wood County Health Department lists “active cases” by ZIP codes. As of this week, there are 19 areas in the county with active cases.

The Bowling Green ZIP code area has the most this week, with 40-35 active cases, followed by Perrysburg with 26-30 cases. 

Areas with 1-5 cases each include Cygnet, Deshler, Fostoria, Jerry City, Luckey, Millbury, North Baltimore, Northwood, Pemberville, Portage, Risingsun, Rossford, Rudolph, Tontogany, Walbridge, Wayne and Weston.

The latest numbers reported for schools (week of March 8) in the county included 22 students and 9 staff: 

  • Bowling Green City Schools: 6 students, 0 staff.
  • BG Christian Academy: 8 students, 5 staff.
  • Elmwood: 3 students, 2 staff
  • Rossford: 4 students, 1 staff.
  • Westside Montessori/Perrysburg Preschool: 1 student, 0 staff.
  • Wood County ESC: 0 students, 1 staff.

Of the total COVID cases in Wood County, at least 917 have been in long-term care facilities. The cases recorded since last March include 474 residents and 443 staff. Those numbers from long-term care facilities are updated every Thursday.
