Wood County up to 7,724 COVID-19 cases since March

Wood County is now up to 7,724 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 since March, according to the Monday, Dec. 28, update from the Wood County Health Department. That’s 80 more cases than last Wednesday.

The number of active COVID cases in the county is now 303, which is 44 fewer than on last Wednesday. Active cases are Wood County residents who are being monitored by the health department according to state and federal isolation criteria.

A total of 433 local residents have been hospitalized for the coronavirus since March, with six more being hospitalized since Christmas Eve. 

The county has recorded a total of 143 deaths from COVID. Of those, one was in his 30s, two were in their 40s, four were in their 50s, 14 were in their 60s, 29 in their 70s, 58 in their 80s, and 34 in their 90s, and one in her 100s. 

Of the total 7,724 cases in the county as of today, those with the virus ranged in age from 1 to 103, with the median age of 39. Of those testing positive, 4,001 were female, and 3,723 were male. 

Cases involving BGSU students and staff who live in surrounding counties and commute are included in BGSU figures, but not Wood County’s total count.

Every Wednesday, the Wood County Health Department lists “active cases” by ZIP codes. As of last week, there were 24 areas in the county with active cases.

The Perrysburg ZIP code area again had the most last week, with 131-135 active cases. Next was Bowling Green, with 86-90 active cases.

Northwood was the next highest with 16-20 active cases. Pemberville, Rossford and Walbridge each had 11-15 cases. 

Areas with 6-10 cases each included Grand Rapids, Luckey, Millbury, North Baltimore and Wayne.

Areas with 1-5 cases each included Bloomdale, Bradner, Custar, Cygnet, Deshler, Fostoria, Haskins, Hoytville, Portage, Risingsun, Rudolph, Weston, and an area in Wood County with a Toledo ZIP code.

The latest numbers reported for schools (week of Dec. 14) in the county included 33 students and 20 staff: 

  • Bowling Green City Schools: 1 student, 2 staff.
  • Eastwood: 8 students, 3 staff.
  • Elmwood: 3 students, 1 staff.
  • Lake: 5 students, 4 staff.
  • Montessori School in BG: 0 students, 1 staff.
  • Northwood: 0 students, 3 staff.
  • Otsego: 2 students, 0 staff.
  • Penta Career Center: 5 students, 3 staff.
  • Rossford: 7 students, 1 staff.
  • St. Aloysius: 1 student, 0 staff.
  • St. Louis School: 1 student, 1 staff.
  • St. Rose School: 0 students, 1 staff.

Of the total COVID cases in Wood County, at least 770 have been in long-term care facilities – 425 were residents and 345 were staff. Those numbers from long-term care facilities are updated every Wednesday. 

The following facilities have had cases, as of Dec. 23:

  • Kingston Residence of Perrysburg: 44 residents, 23 staff.
  • Kingston Rehabilitation of Perrysburg: 41 residents, 63 staff.

  • Heartland of Perrysburg: 33 residents, 26 staff.
  • Otterbein Perrysburg: 6 residents, 19 staff.
  • Otterbein Pemberville: 23 residents, 26 staff.
  • Heritage Corner Health Care, Bowling Green: 14 residents, 10 staff.
  • St. Clare Commons, Perrysburg: 2 residents, 5 staff.
  • Grand Rapids Care Center: 1 resident, 7 staff.
  • Briar Hill Health Campus, North Baltimore: 47 residents, 30 staff.
  • Brookdale Bowling Green: 20 residents, 13 staff.
  • Wood Lane Residential Werner House: 3 residents, 2 staff.
  • Wood Haven Health Care: 2 residents, 10 staff.
  • Waterford at Levis Commons: 13 residents, 10 staff.
  • Bowling Green Manor: 76 residents, 45 staff.
  • Waterford at Levis Commons: 12 residents, 8 staff.
  • Wood Lane Residential Dunn House: 6 residents, 5 staff.
  • Wood Lane Residential Rollie Hampton House: 1 resident, 1 staff.
  • Wood Lane Residential Schult House: 4 residents, 3 staff.
  • Wood Lane Residential Bair House: 5 residents, 8 staff.
  • Wood County Residential Restle House: 1 resident; 1 staff.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, at least 101 of Wood County’s deaths from COVID-19 have occurred in long-term care facilities.
