Judy Ann VandenBroek passed away peacefully at home on June 23, 2025 at the age of 74. Born on March 23, 1951, in Napoleon, Ohio, Judy dedicated her life to family, education, and advocacy. She is survived by her companion and husband of over 53 years, Dean VandenBroek. Together they raised three children within whom she instilled her passion and kindness: Keith (Kelly), Nicholas (Angela), and Heather VandenBroek. She is also survived by her brother Rick (Cathy) Smith and a good number of nieces and nephews. Judy was preceded in death by her parents: Richard Smith Jr. and Opal (Cross) Smith.
Judy dedicated over four decades to shaping the lives of countless students and advocating for accessible education for all. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in education from Bowling Green State University (BGSU). During her career, she also taught in the Defiance and Oregon City Schools.
In 1993, Judy brought her teaching experience back to BGSU where she inspired new teachers across the School of Intervention Services. She had a lasting impact as a faculty advisor to the Council for Exceptional Children and through her roles supporting the development of the Inclusive Early Childhood program. She cherished her semester teaching abroad at Keele University in the UK. She was honored with emerita status for her distinguished service in 2016. Her influence will be felt for many years to come.
Judy’s love of learning extended beyond her career into her hobbies, motherhood and community service. She enjoyed supporting her children’s passions, often learning right alongside them. This included reading stacks of books, cheering on the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team, crafting memories into scrapbooks, volunteering as a proud “Band Mom,” or attending herpetology meetings. She also had a special place in her heart for animals and conservation. She will be missed not only by her family but also by the many “grandpets” in her life.
Her celebration of life services will be announced in the coming days.
