Bobcat girls compete in D1 state meet
The Bowling Green Girls Cross Country team placed 20th at the OHSAA Division 1 State Championships on Saturday at Fortress Obetz in Obetz.
The Bobcats ran their fastest top 5 average of the season of 19:50 (previous best was 20:00), as 4 of the 7 runners ran their fastest time of the year. The other 3 runners were all within 10 seconds of their best time. Lilly Downey paced BG with a season best time of 18:56 and placed 48th.
This was the first time a BG runner has broken 19:00 since 2006. “She ran a smart and confident race as she passed nearly 100 runners from the 1 mile mark to the finish. She has a bright future in this sport and will continue to make an impact on future teams,” according to Coach Pat Carney.
Senior Natalie Neeson crossed the line in 19:55 followed closely by teammate Kate Scarletto-Scholl in 20:02. Two seniors rounded out the top 5 with personal season best performances – Shelby Janes and Annie Oberlander closed out their season with a 20:06 and a 20:09 respectively. Freshman Madison Carney ran a 20:40 and Sophomore Maddie Evans ran a season best of 20:58.
With 20 teams in the race it would be easy for one to ask how the Bobcats finished “last”.
“This would be the equivalent of asking a silver medalist at the Olympics how they feel after losing a race,” Carney said. “Every team at this level is loaded with talent and the runners are amazing. The girls were confident and competitive and went down and ran their best race of the season. As coaches, we can ask for nothing more and we are incredibly proud of them. This team has now laid the groundwork for our future teams and has helped establish a culture of hard work and success.”
The Bobcats finish their season as NLL Cardinal Division Champions, Division 1 District Runner Up, Regional Runner up, and State Qualifiers.

The pace of the race got him a bit in the last mile but was able to finish strong. Landon got a bit caught up in heavy traffic in the early stages of the race. BG girls cross-country overcome adversity to qualify for state meet
For the first time since 2006, the Bowling Green High School Girls Cross Country team will be heading to the OHSAA Division 1 State Meet. The girls raced to a Runner up finish on Saturday in the Regional Meet in Tiffin scoring 70 points out distancing 3rd place Tiffin Columbian and 4th place Toledo St. Ursula. Perrysburg won the meet with 20 points. The top 2 teams qualified for the State Meet.
The girls overcame a fair amount of adversity heading into the week as they were dealt a few unfortunate blows. Senior Averie Crawford and 1st ALL NLL runner battled an illness that forced her to stop running and Freshman 2nd team ALL NLL runner Kale Smith season ended a bit early with injury. BG coaches asked alternate Sophomore Maddie Evans and Freshman Madison Carney to step in and race in the Regional race. Both runners, and the rest of the team, overcame this emotional roller coaster and all stepped up in a big way to qualify despite the setbacks.
Freshman Lilly Downey was outstanding and finished 5th in the Region with a personal best of 19:00. (Top 8 runners qualified automatically also). “She ran with a ton of confidence and even when she knew she was in the top 8, she kept pushing for more knowing that her place was going to help her teammates advance.” She was followed by Senior Natalie Neeson who broke 20:00 for the first time in her career finishing in 13th place with a time of 19:54. Sophomore Kate Scarletto-Scholl gave everything she had finishing in 17th in 20:06. “Natalie and Kate put everything into this race. They fought through it with dogged determination and were constantly getting after the next Columbian or St. Ursula runner.”
The next three runners across sealed the Runner up position for BG as alternate Madison Carney ran a :39 second personal best to cross the finish line in 24th place. Senior Annie Oberlander was right behind her in 25th with a :24 second season best. and Senior Shelby Janes crossed in 27th place with a :05 second season best. State Qualifying Sophomore Maddie Evans finished in 41st place.
“Madison, Annie, and Shelby showed up in a big way for the team today. We have talked all season about asking ourselves what we can each do for the team? When the team was hurting emotionally a little bit earlier this week, the girls knew they were going to have to up their game so to speak in order to make this happen. All three girls knew they had to finish in front of Tiffin Columbian and St. Ursula’s 5th girl. They did that and much more as they crossed before Tiffin Columbian’s 3rd runner and St. Ursula’s 4th. This was a critical part of the race and our depth came through today.”

Both runners placed in the top 8 to qualify as individuals. Landon finished in 5th place with a time of 15:49 and Kendrick finished in 7th with a time of 15:50. Behind Fry and Kendrick were Sophomore Sam Wiles in 18th and Senior Sam Challu in 19th. Junior Quinn Rader finished in 27th while Senior Liam Triggs and Junior Shawn Carney crossed together in 32nd and 33rd place.
“The boys average time of 16:15 is one of the fastest times in the State of Ohio and to finish only 9 points out of qualifying stings a bit. The boys ran their hearts out and it just wasn’t quite enough today in this extremely fast Region. Division 1 is incredibly tough and our boys continue to rise to the top level of competition. The team has nothing to hang their heads about as they close out the 2024 season with three Invitational Championships, NLL Cardinal Division Champions, and Division 1 District Runner up. We are all very proud of Landon and Erek and we can’t wait to watch them represent BGHS XC in Columbus. They both ran very smart races and ran to their strengths. Erek went out pretty fast and was in 2nd place at the 2 mile mark in the race. He started to tighten up in the last 400 meters, but was able to hang on. Landon was a bit more conservative in the early stages and was outstanding in the last 800 meters, closing the race very strong. Landon and Erek will compete against the fastest runners in the State and they are ready for the challenge.”
