Bobcat boys cross country comes in second in D II state championship race

The Bowling Green Bobcats Boys ran what Coach Pat Carney said was  “an exceptional team race” Saturday. Nov. 1 in the Division II State Championships at Fortress Obetz Memorial Park in Obetz, to bring home the State Runner-Up trophy.

This the highest a team from Bowling Green has placed in the State Championships. In 1980 the team placed 12th and in 2020  the team placed 20th.  Lexington won the event with 110 points.  BG scored 190, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (CVCA) was third with 196, Anthony Wayne was 4th with 197.  There were 24 teams in the race.

While the Bobcats did not have a runner cross the line until 40th place, it did not take long after that for the six other BG runners to cross.  With a top five BG runners spread of only 23 seconds (the best spread in the field) it became difficult for other teams to beat them.

Sam Wiles got out in front of the BG pack and stayed there for nearly the entire race.  The next 5 Bobcats (Adam Proulx, Rece Simon, Shawn Carney, Landon Fry, and Quinn Rader) ran within 5 seconds of each other for the entire 2nd half of the race.

“They played “leapfrog” with each other all while passing other teams.  It was an incredible display of team running,” Carney reported.  BG was 15th at the 1 mile mark with 363 points, and 5th at the 2 mile mark with 250 points.  They crossed the line in 2nd with 190 points.    The pack closed the gap on Sam and all runners closed in on the the finish line as a team

Runners for Bowling Green finished in the following order in the field of 215 runners:  The first number is their overall place in the race and the second number is their place in the (team score).  There were 48 individual qualifiers from schools that did not qualify as a team.

Junior Sam Wiles  40th (25) 16:22

Sophomore Adam Proulx 46th (30) 16:25

Freshman Rece Simon  59th (36)  16:33

Senior Landon Fry 75th (46) 16:42

Senior Shawn Carney 85th (53) 16:46

Senior Quinn Rader 99th (62) 16:52

Sophomore Lloyd Waldron 127th (84) 17:09

“The boys executed an outstanding race today.  They were patient in the first mile and did not let the adrenaline of the race or the atmosphere get the best of them,” Carney reported. “This happens to so many runners at this level and these guys kept their composure. Sometimes it is mentally very difficult to find oneself behind that many people. They did not panic and stayed confident that they would move up over the course of the 3.1 mile race.  Moving up the way they did, as a pack, pushing and encouraging each other was awesome to witness.  It is the definition of selfless running and teamwork.

“Racing the way we did today probably cost many of the guys the opportunity to run a season PR (Personal Record).  When the plan is to go out in the first mile a little more in control, it made it more difficult to make up that time to run a phenomenal personal best time.  Nothing in today’s race was about what was best for one individual runner.  Everything was about getting the team the best finish they could.”

Bowling Green’s 6th finisher (Quinn Rader) was the best 6th runner in the field and Bowling Green’s 7th runner, Lloyd Waldron, was the 2nd best 7th runner in the race.   In this sport, the top 5 runners score, but the 6th and 7th man can help the team by being ahead of the other teams’ 5th runner.  If this happens, it bumps the score up of your competitors.

“Quinn and Lloyd did some major damage to other teams in the field.  Their places pushed up the score of CVCA and Anthony Wayne and helped us to create a gap and secure the runner up position.”

“Sam Wiles had a terrific bounce back race after a tough Regional race last week.  He ran as our leader and was confident throughout. We love the way he attacks and stays aggressive throughout his races,” Carney said.  “Adam Proulx went from 129th place at the 1 mile mark to 46th overall at the finish.  His determination is infectious to the team.  He works so hard every day in practice and his hard work paid off in this race!”

“Rece Simon was top freshman finisher in the field and once again ran more composed than many upperclassmen,” the coc reported.”   He is talented, but more than that he works hard and never complains.  He is becoming a student of this sport and wants to know how to improve.  He will certainly be one to watch in the years ahead.”

“Watching Seniors Quinn, Shawn, and Landon battle it out one last time on the cross country course proudly wearing the Bowling Green uniform was amazing.  They just pushed each other so well for the good of the team and the result of their efforts became tangible when they stood on the podium on Saturday afternoon.  It was a special moment for them and a perfect way to end their career as Bobcats in the sport of cross country. Lisa (Asst. Coach Lisa Carney) and I are so proud of them and everything they have given to our team.”

Bobcat boys cross country hangs tough to earn berth in state meet

For the third time in school history, the Bowling Green High School Boys Cross Country Team has advanced to the OHSAA State Cross Country Meet.  The Bobcats placed 3rd of 16 teams in the Division 2 Regional Race on Saturday at Hedges Boyer Park in Tiffin, OH.  The top 4 teams advanced to Columbus.

BG scored 93 points in the race.  Lexington won the event with 31, Anthony Wayne was 2nd with 71 and Toledo St. Francis scored 117 for the final berth.

The BGHS Boys teams also advanced in 1980 and 2020.

Cross country has sometimes been described as an individual sport.  What happened Saturday certainly proved that statement to be incorrect.

BG has been led by standout, NLL Champion, Sam Wiles for the entire season.  Coach Pat Carney reported that he was continually followed by Senior Quinn Rader as the Bobcats second man.  On Saturday, Sam had a bit of an off day and Quinn had his shoe stepped on during the race which forced it to come off.  He had to stop and replace it, costing him valuable time and places, all while throwing off the rhythm of his race.

The Bobcats would have to rely on their depth, and trust in each other, to get the job done.  Senior Landon Fry stepped up in a big way and powered his way toward the front of the field in the last mile finishing 11th.

Sophomore Adam Proulx and Freshman Rece Simon continued to battle and make up spots throughout the race.  They encouraged and pushed their teammates along with them throughout the race.  Proulx finished in 17th place and Simon finished 19th.

Sam Wiles, despite not feeling well, never quit and found strength in his teammates and hung on for 20th, while Quinn Rader found teammate Shawn Carney and the two Seniors charged to the finish in 26th and 27th place.  Sophomore Lloyd Waldron ran his best race of the season and finished in 36th place with a time of 17:05.

That put all seven  Bobcats in the top 36 in the field of 134 regional qualifiers.

“Sam Wiles is one of the toughest competitors that we have ever had the privilege to work with,” Crney stated. “Every runner is probably going to have an off day from time to time.  Despite the way he felt, he never quit and never lost focus on the team goal of advancing to the state meet.  We have no doubt that his strong will and the encouragement from his teammates got him across that line today.  We know he will have a bounce back race in Columbus and will be battling with some of the best in the state.”

“Senior Landon Fry has struggled to find his groove this year, but continually puts in the hard work and the mileage,” Carney said.   He came up big today as our front runner.  On a day when things for Quinn and Sam were not going their way, Landon led his team forward and the younger athletes followed his lead.

“Senior Quinn Rader had every excuse to slow down or even drop out on Saturday.  When a runner loses a shoe in the 1st mile of a race, it is physically and emotionally draining in a meet of this caliber.  He showed tremendous fight and determination to get back in the race and finish strong for the team. We cannot wait to see his race next week in Columbus!”

Carney reported: ”Sophomore Adam Proulx and Freshman Rece Simon both run a bit like they are possessed.  They are incredible competitors and have handled big meet competitions better than many more experienced runners.  They are positive and excited and they seem to love the thrill of the race.  Their words of encouragement to their teammates today in the middle of the race is what makes this team so special.”  Rece Simon was the top Freshman finisher in the Region and remains one of the top Freshman in the State of Ohio.

“Senior Shawn Carney has been one of our most consistent runners of the season,” the coach said. “He found himself in a position where not only could he help the team with his own race, but also help Quinn regain his composure and help his teammate get to the finish line.  Shawn shows leadership on and off the course everyday with this group.”

Sophomore Lloyd Waldron was put into the Regional meet as an alternate and stepped up in a big way. He wanted to make sure he stayed ahead of Anthony Wayne’s 5th man and he did exactly that.  As BG’s 7th man. Waldron finished in 36th place and the Anthony Wayne 5th runner placed 42nd.  “Lloyd did exactly what the team needed him to do today.  He ran against his competition and beat them.  His race was outstanding!”

While the boxing match with Anthony Wayne continues, BG feels confident that they will win the final round against the Generals next week in Columbus.

“Overall, we came into this race with nerves that were heightened.  We were tight, and we probably went out the 1st mile a bit too fast.  The adrenaline was really pumping.  We believe now that we have qualified, we can go down to Columbus and be right in the mix with the best teams in Ohio.  It will be a very exciting race!.”

BG will race in the D2 State Meet at 2:20pm at Fortress Obetz in Obetz, Ohio next Saturday, November 1st.

Bobcat girls cross country team finishes season with strong showing at regional race

The Bowling Green High School Girls Cross Country team ran its best race in five weeks on Saturday, Oct. 25,  at the Division 2 Regional Race at Hedges Boyer Park in Tiffin.  The girls placed 8th among 16 teams in a very strong and competitive field.  Sophomore Madison Carney led the Bobcats with a 28th place finish and a time of 20:03.  She was quickly followed by Junior Kate Scarletto-Scholl who finished 31st and Sophomore Kale Smith at 35th.

Madison Carney ran a 30 second season best and was 6 spots away from qualifying as an individual to the State meet. Coach Pat Carney reported: “Madison races with a ton of confidence and never panics in a race.  She steadily improved throughout the race and had a very strong last mile.  Her race was very impressive.”

Of Scarletto-Scholl, Carney said: ”Kate ran very aggressively off the starting line and in the 1st half.  We will never fault a runner for being aggressive and getting after a race.  She is a talented runner. When that is mixed with her tremendous work ethic, amazing things happen.  She will continue to be a force in Northwest Ohio in her Senior year next season.”

Kale Smith saved her best for last this season also running a personal best of 20:21, Carney reported.  “Kale has battled some various leg issues this season but has stayed confident and determined to see it through for the team. She ran a very nice race”

Junior Rylee Ruehl was the next Bobcat finisher in  65th with a  21:35.  The coach said: ”Rylee specializes in the 400 in track and this sport certainly pushes her limits.  She has done a tremendous job this year taking on the challenge and growing as a distance runner.

Senior Belle Stanford, a transfer student from Tipp City (Tippecanoe High School), was the 5th Bobcat to cross with a huge season best of 21:50.   Carney said: ”Belle was our alternate coming into the postseason and did not run in the District race.  The team needed her today and she stepped up in a big way with a 40 second personal best.  She has been a fantastic addition to our team and we are so proud of her efforts!”

Senior Emarie Headly was the next runner in with a time of 22:16, Carney said.  “Emarie has been a terrific team Captain and has been incredibly encouraging of all of her teammates throughout the season.  She ran a strong competitive race today.  The team will certainly miss her leadership.”

Freshman Eleanor Anzicek  finished 94th with a time of 22:48.  Eleanor ran a very solid race today and gained valuable experience in large postseason meets.  She will learn from all of this and come back next year knowing exactly what all of this looks and feels like.  We know she will take the challenge head on,” Carney said.”

“Coach (Lisa) Carney and I could not be more proud of this team as it continually faced tough situations and many changes in the line up.  They stuck together and showed true determination and resiliency through to the end.”

The Bobcat girls finish the season with one Invitational win, one runner up invitational performance, third in the Cardinal Division of the NLL and Regional Qualifiers.
