I am writing with strong support for the proposed Bowling Green Schools combined levy and bond issue with its One Community, One School concept.
First, this proposal is very different from the two levies that were defeated last year. Most notably, the levy is fairer to those in the farming community who, for at least the last thirty years, have been opposed to levies that were 100 percent property taxes. The Nov. 5 levy is 50 percent a property tax, while the other 50 percent is a traditional income tax. Additionally, senior citizens catch a break by not having Social Security funds taxed. Vote Yes!
Secondly, community leaders are making concerted efforts to revitalize and grow our town with an influx of young families and new businesses, and are also increasing town/gown partnerships. The BG Chamber of Commerce approved while Mayor Edwards and Council President Aspacher have also endorsed the One Community, One School option. Police Chief Hetrick has stated that a single school is the safer option. Vote Yes!
Thirdly, the economy remains strong; employment is high, and both the city of BG and Wood County governments show prosperous status in 2019. This is a great time to move forward. Vote Yes!
I believe we are at a pivotal crossroads in Bowling Green. We need to be bold and look to the future. Let us do what is best for kids by building the facilities they need to learn and develop in their increasingly global world. Now is the time.
Our kids are the future. As a retired educator, I believe in them! Please join me in voting YES for the BG School levy/bond issue, One Community, One School, on November 5.
