Bowling Green State University has fired its athletic director Bob Moosbrugger.
In a statement issued today (Aug. 24), BGSU President Rodney Rogers cited changes in Division I athletics for the move. Those changes include student athletes ability to make money from the use of their names and likenesses.
“We need to consider new perspectives and strongly position BGSU Athletics for the future,” Rogers said. “We remain committed to competing at the highest levels athletically and academically.”
The university, he stated, needs “to increase and diversify its resources.”
Moosbrugger was hired in July 2016. It was a feel-good homecoming for the former BGSU athlete. He played baseball for two years before setting down his glove to concentrate on academics.
Meeting with the media shortly after his appointment, he said his dream had been to be an athletic director.
He came to BGSU from San Diego State where he’d been assistant director of athletics and chief operating officer.
In his statement, Rogers praised the 1994 BGSU graduate for what has been accomplished in the past six years.
“During that time, the University’s athletics programs have certainly made progress. As a new president in 2018, I especially appreciated his leadership and counsel to me. On a personal level, I could always count on Bob’s integrity, kindness and commitment to his alma mater. Beyond the accomplishments, which include securing our baseball program’s future, navigating COVID-19, increasing our high GPA levels, and elevating the success of our volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and women’s basketball teams, Bob has been a champion of our student-athletes and their success from his first day.”
Stacy Kosciak, the current deputy athletic director, will move into the role of interim athletic director while the university conducts a national search.
