The taste-testers were the big winners, but the holidays were a little sweeter for Sandy Lane and Carol Slater when they took home top honors at the Holiday Bake-off hosted by the Wood County District Public Library.

Out of 21 bakers, Lane received the most votes with her triple-threat of snickerdoodles, cut-out sugar cookies and Mexican wedding cookies.

“They’re basic cookies, but I’ve been making them for a while,” she said. “I’ve been able to make little changes and zhuzh them up a bit, giving them a little extra love.”

A self-proclaimed “townie,” Lane recently returned home to Bowling Green after being away for a few years, and this was her first year to enter the contest.

“I’m so happy to jump back into community events,” she said. “I love baking for anyone who wants to eat what I cook.”

Carol Slater, left, won second place in the Holiday Bake-off.

Another first-time entrant, Slater won second place for her grandmother’s recipe from Scotland for Empire Biscuits.

“I’m the one with the recipe now, so my kids told me I had to bring them tonight,” she said. “Anytime the neighbors want cookies, this is what they want. If the cousins want cookies, this is it.”
