Time stood still earlier this month when the frigid cold was blamed for a pin breaking in the historic clock in the Wood County Courthouse.
But as of this morning, the 120-year-old clock was back in business once again. Maintenance staff were climbing the steps into the 195-foot clockhouse tower to set the clock to the correct time.
“Everything’s turning,” it just needs to be set to the proper time, said Wes Sattler, of the county maintenance department.
“Knock on wood,” it will keep working, Sattler said.
“It’s all original equipment,” Sattler said of the giant clock towering over the city. So the extreme cold temperatures were thought to be the “last nail in the coffin” for the clock.
It turned out that a single pin in the shaft connecting the clock motor to the clock hands had broken.
Sattler said the courthouse crew has become adept at clock repairs over the years.
“It’s an absolute nightmare,” he said. “We’re self-proclaimed clock experts.”
