A “bike gang” was recognized as the Bicycle SpokesPerson of the Year Monday evening at the Bowling Green City Council meeting.

This is the first time the award was presented to a group of people – made up of nine youngsters who call themselves the “Montessori Bike Gang.”

The group of Montessori students meet up to ride to school each morning. The “gang” includes Matthew and Josephine Bostic, Ben and Henry Clements, Ella and Luke Sommerfeld, Ingrid Stansbery, and Cori and Cole Vanneman.

The Bicycle SpokesPerson of the Year award is presented each year to a nominee who best exemplifies the spirit of Bowling Green bicycling through involvement in bicycling, bicycle safety, and other bicycle-related activities.

The award is sponsored each year by the Bowling Green Bicycle Safety Commission and CycleWerks.

The “bike gang” meets at one of the member’s homes to bike to and from school throughout the spring and fall of the school year. The nomination form said the youths are mindful of safety by looking each way before proceeding into an intersection, always wearing bicycle helmets, and using the hybrid beacon when crossing Sand Ridge Road.

“They enjoy the companionship of biking together, the fun they share and the fact that they’re using their own foot-powered transportation to get to where they need to go,” the nomination form stated.
