Art of Diversity winners announced

Simone Spruce's “Oh, Freedom” as a first place honoree in "The The Art of Diversity: An Introspective Journey to Belonging” in 2022.

Winners have been named in Bowling Green State University’s “The Art of Diversity: An Introspective Journey to Belonging” which runs through Saturday, Jan. 22, in the School of Art’s Wankelman Gallery.

Hosted by the BGSU Division of Diversity and Belonging, Honors College Learning Center and Fine Arts Center Galleries, the virtual and in-person showcase features visual and performance art from artists in Wood, Lucas and Erie counties, including K-12 students, community members, and BGSU students, faculty and staff.

First place: America Parra-Gonzalez, grades 9-11, “Rebirth”

Winning performance arts submissions are available for viewing on The Art of Diversity page on BGSU.edu.

First place winners were:

  • Alison Benbow, BGSU student, “The Glass Closet.”
  • Simone Spruce, BGSU faculty, staff, community, “Oh, Freedom.”
  • Gavina Rupasinghe, 6 and under, “Miro Fun.”
  • Mason Richmond, grades 4-6, “Notecard Design.”
  • America Parra-Gonzalez, grades 9-11, “Rebirth.”
  • Kennedy Schlessman, grades 6-8, “A Deer of Belonging.”
  • Gavina Rupasinghe, 6 and under, “Miro Fun.’
Gavina Rupasinghe won first place for artists 6 and under for “Miro Fun” (right). Among the second place winners Ali Alabkary’s “Altered Face,” Grades 1-3 (top left) and Vicky Garcia Ornelas’s “Tesselation People,” Grades 4-5 (bottom left).

Other winners were:

  • BGSU students: Sarah Stanley, second; Kyle Nelson, third; and Christopher Pickett, fourth.
  • Faculty, staff, and community: Vicki Knauerhase, second; M. M. Dupay, third; and Kahni Begum, fourth.
  • Grades 1-3: Ali Alabkary, second; Yocelyn Sanchez-Perez, third; and Zavier Moore, fourth.
  • Grades 4-5: Vicky Garcia Ornelas, second; Rayan Khan, third; and Keegan Brentlinger, fourth.
  • Grades 9-11: Mikelle Flynn, second and Denise Sherer, third.

The gallery is open Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
