The world renowned Canadian Brass stopped by at BGSU’s College of Musical Arts to do a little teaching.

The quintet, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, is in the area to perform with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.in the Peristyle.

Bill Mathis, dean of the College of Musical Arts, said he was contacted by the symphony in December about having the ensemble do a master class. The group had an educational component as part of their contract with the symphony.

Mathis said he readily agreed. The five members of the ensemble worked with the BGSU Graduate Brass Quintet.

They offered praise as well as advice on tone color, balance, phrasing, and the importance of working with musicians who share a vision for what an ensemble should be.

Before teaching though, the Canadian Brass did what they do best, entertain. They marched into Kobacker Hall from the lobby playing “Just a Closer Walk To Thee” in true New Orleans fashion, and then performed a short piece by Monteverdi.

Chuck Daellenbach, tuba, offered up plenty of humorous patter as he does during Canadian Brass’ performances. Daellenbach is the sole founding member remaining with the group. Also with the Canadian Brass were: Jeff Nelsen, horn, Caleb Hudson and James Vaughen, trumpets, and Achilles Liarmakopoulos, trombone.

Members of the BGSU Graduate Quintet are: Jane Kelly and Ben Dubber, trumpets, Michael Goss, horn, Jules Shinkle, trombone, and James Barr, tuba.
