Batey optimistic about direction of COVID cases on campus

BGSU has reported 87 new cases of COVD-19 in the past week, fewer than half what were reported last week.

This decline, said Ben Batey, the university’s chief health and wellness officer, is consistent with the trends in Wood and Erie counties. This is being seen at the Falcon Health Center as well, Batey told Faculty Senate on Tuesday. The center has experienced an almost overnight drop in cases.

Wood County still has a high level of cases according to the CDC. Batey said.

He told faculty that he anticipates cases will continue to decline through February. “Then as we enter the spring, we’ll hopefully be in a really good position case wise.”

Health officials are being watchful for the emergence of any new variants, he said. “We stand ready to respond if needed. We’re optimistic at the resources that we’ve built over time. We have blueprints on how to be flexible how to stand up testing to the demand.”

Of the cases reported this week, 78 were students – 45 living off-campus and 33 living on-campus, two were members of the faculty, and seven were staff. That’s down from 183 cases last week. Nine students are isolated in housing on campus.

The university has reported 612 cases since the beginning of the semester – 522 students, 49 staff, and 11 faculty.
