In response to pandemic, BGSU cancels spring break & adopts flexible grading policy

Bowling Green State University is canceling spring break, and instead will have four wellness days spread throughout the semester.

In a message to students, President Rodney Rogers explained that the move was made “out of an abundance of caution.”

Canceling the break will limit students traveling and spreading COVID-19. Spring Break was scheduled for March 22-26.

“However, we still believe our students, who work so hard, deserve scheduled breaks from their coursework,” Rogers stated. “We are announcing four Wellness Days this spring semester where classes will not be held.”

“Wellness  programming” as well as other activities  focusing “on our commitment to create public good,” will be held on those days. Additional details will be forthcoming

Wellness Days will be:

  • Friday, Feb. 12
  • Thursday, March 11
  • Tuesday, March 30
  • Wednesday, April 14

Also, after a vote Tuesday when Faculty Senate approved a resolution put forward by  Undergraduate Student Government  and Graduate Senate, the university will adopt a flexible grading system that is the same as was put in place at the end of spring semester.

The new system gives students the option to switch from a letter grade to a satisfactory/unsatisfactory grade and extends the deadline for making the change.

Students, however, are urged to consult with their advisors before making a decision. That, the letter to students noted, is important “especially for graduate students or students in pre-professional programs such as pre-med or pre-law or those students interested in pursuing graduate education.”
