A Bowling Green man being pursued after reportedly shoplifting, ditched his car and swam to an island in the Maumee River on Sunday afternoon. A water rescue team was deployed, and he was taken into custody.
Aaron Gade, 44, allegedly stole $477 worth of items from the WalMart in Bowling Green, Sunday after 2 p.m. A Wood County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted Gade’s car and attempted to stop the vehicle.
Gade, however, reportedly failed to stop for the deputy and a pursuit took place. The pursuit was terminated by the deputy as the suspect crossed the Maumee River into Waterville, according to the sheriff’s office.
Waterville Police Department was able to locate the suspect as he fled on foot into the Maumee River. Gade reportedly swam in the river to an island.
A water rescue was conducted with the help of Monclova Township Fire Department, Napoleon Fire Department and Waterville Fire Department. Gade was taken into custody without incident and was treated for minor injuries.
Waterville Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted in Gade’s apprehension.
