BG voters to cast ballots on county levy, school bonds, 8 school board candidates, 7 council and 2 mayoral candidates

On the heels of Tuesday’s special election, Wednesday at 4 p.m. was the deadline for the slate of candidates and issues to appear on the November ballot.

For Bowling Green voters that means one countywide levy, one school bond issue, eight school board candidates, seven city council and two mayoral candidates.

The sole countywide levy on the ballot is for Wood County Developmental Disabilities, which is seeking a renewal levy, not exceeding 2.45 mills, for five years. The levy is to fund operational and capital needs.

Five school districts in the county are attempting bond issues, renewal tax levies and income tax increases. On the ballot will be Bowling Green City School District, as well as Eastwood, Elmwood, Otsego and Perrysburg schools.

BG City Schools is seeking a bond issue raising $72.8 million over 30 years, to fund the construction of a high school and related facilities, plus renovations and improvements of existing facilities.

All across the county, school districts will also be electing board of education members.

For Bowling Green, eight candidates have filed for three seats on the school board. Filing as of Wednesday were:

  • Stephen Bateson, 7910 Wingston Road, Rudolph.
  • Rick Busselle, 880 Country Club Drive, Bowling Green.
  • Joseph M. Edens, 8 Indian Creek Drive, Rudolph.
  • Howard A. Gonyer, 612 N. Wintergarden Road, Bowling Green.
  • Steven C. Goyer, 360 Colony Lane, Bowling Green.
  • Tracy Hovest, 988 Reeves Court, Bowling Green.
  • Brian A. Paskvan, 331 N. Church St., Bowling Green.
  • Peggy A. Thompson, 559 Sand Ridge Road, Bowling Green.

Bowling Green city residents will be voting on mayoral and council positions. Since the earlier filing deadline, five candidates have withdrawn from the race.

For Mayor:

  • Democratic incumbent Michael Aspacher, 206 Larchwood Drive.
  • Green Party Joseph Rosario DeMare, 517 S. Main St.
  • Withdrawing from the race was Republican challenger Tim J. Stechschulte.

Council at-large

  • Democratic incumbent Jeffery J. Dennis, 217 Clay St.
  • Republican challenger Eric J. Peck, 1615 Oakwood Court.
  • Withdrawing from the race was Republican Douglas Simpson.

First Ward Council

  • Republican challenger David Drain, 228 E. Court St.
  • Democratic challenger Damon Sherry, 451 Frazee Ave.
  • Withdrawing from the race was Democratic incumbent Nick Rubando.

Second Ward Council

  • Unopposed Democratic incumbent Joel O’Dorisio, 1001 Napoleon Road.

Third  Ward Council

  • Unopposed Democratic incumbent Rachel Phipps, 920 Clark St.
  • Withdrawing from the race was Republican challenger Karen Trent.

Fourth Ward Council

  • Unopposed Republican incumbent William J. Herald, 1030 Conneaut Ave.
  • Withdrawing from the race was Independent Lindsay Durham.
