Front line workers dealing with the coronavirus pandemic should get well fed in the next three weeks, if the amount of money donated to Meals for Heroes is any indication.
David Anderson, general manager for Falcon Sports Properties, said the initiative had hoped to bring in enough money to buy 250 meals when the drive started last week. They brought in enough to buy 750 for the first week of the three-week effort.
“We’re not surprised by how supportive the fans are, but boy they came out,” he said.
As of this morning enough money for 100 meals for the second week has been raised, he said.
“We hope the momentum keeps going.”
Meals for Heroes is Bowling Green State University Athletics move to marshal its partners and fans to provide meals for hospital and nursing home workers, police and firefighters, and grocery store workers.
Lat week the money was raised went to provide meals from Campus Pollyeyes for those working at Wood County Hospital and nursing homes in BG. Those meals will be delivered late this week.
This week funds will be raised to provide meals from Sam B’s to BG police and fire next week.
The third and final round will be Jimmy John’s providing food to workers at three grocery stores Meijer, Wal Mart and Kroger.
Each meal costs $6. Fans can visit the site and make their donation with a credit card, then the money is directly transferred to the restaurant.
The project was first done at the University of Tulsa. Anderson said it worked well there, but at BGSU they decided to tweak it and extend it over three weeks.
Tulsa and BGSU are both affiliated with Learfield/IMG.
Falcon Sports Properties handles multimedia marketing and advertising for BGSU Athletics. The restaurants and grocery store as well as Wood County are all partners in their marketing efforts.
