BGSU faculty members condemn violation of Black Americans’ human rights

This statement was written by a group of BGSU faculty. We know, though, that our words are not as important as action, and we urge anyone who has signed or who reads the statement to commit in any way they can to the dismantling of white supremacy.
You can find a list of immediate potential actions in this article. (The article’s title indicates that it is white people who should be doing this work, and that is absolutely true– but to clarify, our statement was not signed only by white faculty members.) The article is continuously updated with new suggestions.

We, the undersigned faculty members and graduate assistants, stand in solidarity with BGSU’s Black faculty, staff, students, and alumni. We recognize and see that the pain, grief, and anger of this moment are constants of Black experience, and impact Black lives and work.

We condemn the use of excessive force by police, the continued devaluation of Black lives, and the continued violation of human rights. We know that in addition to the recent violent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Tony McDade, the coronavirus pandemic has further exacerbated our nation’s systemic, racialized inequities and led to the deaths of thousands of Black Americans. And we condemn the state and federally sanctioned violence against those protesting injustice in cities across the nation.

Our university exists within these same white supremacist structures. We commit to de-normalizing Black deaths, and to combating systemic racism in BGSU’s classrooms and work spaces. We stand in witness to the violence and systemic oppression perpetrated against Black communities near and far, and we mourn the loss of Black life.
