From BGSU PERCUSSION STUDIO
The BGSU Graduate Percussion Ensemble will perform the updated soundtrack for the classic Canadian film “Paddle to the Sea” Friday, April 1, at 8 pm in Kobacker Hall, on the BGSU campus.
The piece was created by Third Coast Percussion in 2018.
The 30-minute piece acts as an updated soundtrack to the 1966 film produced by the Film Board of Canada, which was inspired by the beloved children’s book of the same name.
The piece combines common percussion instruments such as drums, marimba, and vibraphone with glass bottles, ceramic tiles, a hydrophone, children’s toy bells, and synthesizers to bring a new layer of emotional depth to the film’s Oscar-nominated imagery. The result is an audio-visual experience that is at once nostalgic and contemporary, familiar and intriguing.
The concert is free and open to the public. The first half of the program will consist of duets featuring graduating master’s degree students in the College of Musical Arts’ Percussion Studio, followed by the performance of “Paddle to the Sea.”
Third Coast Percussion are a Grammy-winning percussion quartet based in Chicago. They were the featured ensemble for the 2020 Bowling Green New Music Festival, where they presented a virtual program of new works for percussion.
The ensemble was also the featured performer at the 2017 celebration of centenary of composer Lou Harrison at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle, presented conjunction with BGSU.
