BGSU saxophonist among Orchestra League winners featured at TSO concert

BGSU saxophone student Mary Borus will be among the young artists featured when the Toledo Symphony presents “Introducing the Orchestra: Featuring Young Artist Competition Winners” Saturday, Feb.11 at 3 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 316 Adams St, #3, Toledo.

The first half of the program will showcase small groups of musicians performing throughout Trinity Episcopal Church.

Then the full orchestra will come together for a program  featuring Toledo Symphony League Young Artist Competition Winners. 

The winners featured are: 

  • Mary Borus, a native of Shelby Township, Michigan  now a resident of Bowling Green, now studies with John Sampen working toward a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance. She also plans to minor in Business Administration. 
  • Miki Kawamura is a 10th grader at Findlay High School, training in classical piano for 11 years with Kathleen Price. Aside from piano, Miki plays first violin in her school orchestra and participated in the Northwest Region Orchestra in 2021 and 2022. She is also very involved in ballet, training.  
  • Hayool Lee was born in Busan, South Korea in March 2012.She was actively involved and excelled in young girl’s ballet group in Korea until she had to move to the States in 2018 with her family. She is now 10 years old and a 5th grader at Central Trail Elementary in Sylvania. Hayool started playing the violin when she was in the 2nd grade. This is the third year of playing the violin. In the beginning, learning violin wasn’t easy for Hayool, due to the language barrier. She is currently studying violin with Dr. Vasile Beluska.  

The program will feature: The first and second movements of Darius Milhaud’s “Scaramouche”; the first movement of W.A. Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major; and the first movement of Anton Rubinstein’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in D Minor.

The orchestra will also play: Adolphus Hailstork’s “On Freedom”; Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture”;
Jennifer Higdon’s “Machine”;  George Walker’s “Lyric for Strings”; and John Williams’ “Imperial March” from “The Empire Strikes Back.”
