Bowling Green State University announced today that it has joined the “Ohio IP Promise,” an initiative led by Lt. Governor Jon Husted designed to more easily license and commercialize intellectual property developed by Ohio’s public universities.

“BGSU is a public university creating public good. One of the ways we do that is by working to address our societal challenges through research and innovation,” said BGSU President Rodney K. Rogers. “The IP Promise creates an opportunity where discovery can thrive through partnerships among universities, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors and industry. By enhancing collaboration, high-impact discoveries at BGSU will go to market more quickly, boosting Ohio’s economy and improving its residents’ lives with new products and services.”

While BGSU has had past successes in the commercialization of IP such as software, satellite imagery technology and 3-D printing, the new promise will allow the University to more quickly move IP to commercialization.

BGSU and the other 13 public universities in Ohio agreed to the following guiding principles as the foundation for the Ohio IP Promise:

  1. Flexible: provide industry choices for accessing intellectual property developed through sponsored research.
  2. Transparent: publish template sponsored research and license agreements.
  3. Simple: deliver fair and streamlined guidelines for faculty creator startups.
  4. Clear: communicate licensing processes on university websites in a clear, prominent way.
  5. Easy: provide well-defined university entry points for industry, investors and entrepreneurs.

“BGSU is pleased to join the Inter-University Council of Ohio and our sister institutions across the state in supporting and implementing the Ohio IP Promise,” Rogers said.
