Challenge coins offered to Wood County veterans, reservists, guard members

(Submitted by Wood County Veterans Assistance Center)

Any honorably discharged Wood County veteran, reservist or guard member is eligible to receive the new Wood County Veterans Services challenge coin.

In the military, challenge coins are proof that you are a member of a unit or served on a specific tour of duty. In early military history, they were used for security. A service member may have been required to show the coin to prove their loyalty.

These coins mean the holder is a member of an elite group of people, such as Wood County veterans.

To receive a coin, the veteran, reservist or guard member on active duty, retired or honorably discharged shall come into the Wood County Veterans Assistance Center for services including but not limited to registration, VA benefits, updating personal information, photo ID and financial assistance.

One of the following documents is required to verify service:

  • Wood County Veterans Identification Card.
  • DD 214 Honorable Discharge.
  • Reservists and guard members currently serving shall furnish a copy of the military ID card.

Only one coin shall be issued to an eligible veteran, reservist of guard member.
