Cocoon gets grant to furnish children’s and teen area in shelter

The Boards of Trustees of the Waterville Community Foundation and Toledo Community Foundation have approved a grant from the Katherine R. Smith Fund for Abused Children to The Cocoon in the amount of $6,224.

The Katherine R. Smith Funds for Youth provide support for programming that enhances the lives of young people up to age 18, with an emphasis on serving children with developmental disabilities or those who have been abused.

The grant will be used to furnish the Children’s Area/Teen Respite Room/Counseling Area in our domestic and sexual violence shelter facility, which serves survivors throughout Wood County. Our 24 bed facility provides emergency shelter to approximately 60 adults and their families annually, with the average length of stay being 57 days.

This funding will allows younger children staying in shelter to have a comfortable and homey space in which to play and heal, for teens to have dedicated space of their own to connect, do homework, or have some time to themselves, and a dedicated space for a children’s counselor to assist children in their journey toward healing.

The Toledo Community Foundation grant will be used to equip youth-serving areas of the facility.

“The services offered to these children are critical to accommodate the families that temporarily call The Cocoon their home,” said Keith Burwell, president of Toledo Community Foundation.
