From BOWLING GREEN AREA COMMUNITY BAND
Visions of brave aerialists on the high wire, hilarious clowns in full costume and a hearty welcome by the ringmaster will be re-created by the Bowling Green Area Community Bands on Sunday, May 19, at 4 p.m. in Bowling Green Performing Arts Center. Entitled “A Night at the Circus”, the season finale concert will feature circus marches, music from Cirque Du Soleil and original choreography from professional and student dancers.
The BGACB welcomes the talented students of Julie’s Dance Studio in two featured numbers “The Screamer,” a traditional circus march played at blistering speed and a medley of original tunes composed for Cirque du Soleil, the enormously popular series of live shows. Led by veteran teacher and artist Julie Setzer, Julie’s Dance Studio has been in operation since 1985, serving students and adults from throughout the Bowling Green area.
Hixon Dance, a professional dance troupe from Columbus, will present original works set to the music of Camille Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals,”N”ight Soliloquy’ a haunting piece featuring the band’s principal flutist Kim Kucharski, and Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance.” “Sabre Dance” promises to be a visual and musical three ring circus, as three xylophone soloists enhance the lively choreography. The soloists are Bowling Green resident Frances Zengel plus Ryan Williams and Katherine Hickey of Perrysburg.
This innovative program was conceived and will be conducted by Catherine Lewis, the associate conductor of the Concert Band. The addition of original choreography was made possible by a generous grant from the Bowling Green Community Foundation.
Theconcert will open with BiG Band BG, led by Bill Lake. The jazzers will perform “Night Train,” “Work Song” and “Blues March,” all jazz standards that portray the travel and hard labor behind the scenes of a circus.
