The Wood County Historical Museum at 13660 County Home Road in Bowling Green is participating in the ninth annual Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend (September 2).
A list of participating museums nationwide is available at arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.
As 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, the Museum has two special exhibits that are open now through Dec.1: “Over There! Send Word, the Wood County Boys are Coming” honors Wood County men and women that served in WWI with a special focus on the Wood County homefront. As Armistice Day draws near, “The Return to Normalcy: A Life of Leisure in Wood County 1920-1939” displays a post-WWI look at leisure time activities.
“Visiting a museum is a great way to get to know a community—whether it’s in your hometown or a stop on a road trip,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “We appreciate the enthusiasm of museums all across the country who open their doors for military and their families to spend time together and have new arts experiences.”
“As many military families spend the summer months moving from one duty station to another, or reconnecting with a parent who has returned from deployment, Blue Star Museums helps service members and their families create memories,” said Blue Star Families Chief Executive Officer Kathy Roth-Douquet.
The Wood County Historical Museum is open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and weekends from 1-4 p.m. Admission for non-military families is $5/adult, $1/child, and free for Historical Society members. Other free promotions include “Furlough Friday” – free admission on the first Friday of each month, and Demonstration Days peppered throughout the season.
