Kay Flowerz surrounds herself with poems, prayers and affirmations. She wants to do the same for others.

The Bowling Green transplant from California has written “The Psalms of Flowerz: A Collection of Poems, Prayers, and Affirmations,” which shares her journey from pain to purpose.

The book, published on Amazon, is designed to be a guiding light toward a transformative path of self-discovery and empowerment. It is a path that she knows well.

She grew up in an environment where she was bullied, belittled and abused. At nine years old, she felt lost and didn’t have a place to express herself.  “For me, learning how to rely on God became my faith space,” she said. “I would journal my prayers and write letters to God. I wrote poems. That was my outlet.”

On the outside, she put on a happy face and tried to be positive and please others through her teenage years, but on the inside she felt broken and dealt with depression and suicidal thoughts.

“Because of the childhood trauma and my brokenness, I felt like I wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t worthy of sharing inspiration,” she said.

Yet as a seventh grader, she had a dream that she was writing books and that she would become an author. “Maybe that’s what I’m supposed to do with my life,” she thought.

Over the years, she continued to write and tried to figure everything out. Most important to her journey from pain to purpose has been her faith. She thanks her grandmother for instilling the importance of faith.

“My grandmother took me to church and prayed with me. The way she exemplified faith was really beautiful. She would get on her knees and pray and I would join her,” Flowerz said. “It was so beautiful. I knew I wanted to know God the way my grandmother knew God.”

With therapy and faith, she discovered a journey that would uplift her and find her passion in life. Another revelation convinced her to publish the book of her poems and affirmations that defined her journey under the name “The Psalms of Flowerz.”

“The title and more poems hit me and I knew I had to get the book out. It’s pretty personal and I didn’t know if I should share it with others,” she said. However, the response has been positive and led to other creative outlets for her.

The book is divided into segments that follow a path similar to her life, starting with Broken Within, Finding My Voice, and Psalms of Healing and Praise. Identity in Christ, Pain Meets Purpose, True Love Waits and Resilient Flowerz round out the segments of the book.

Flowerz will talk about her book as the featured speaker at the Wood County District Public Library’s Meet the Author event on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. in the library’s Meeting Room A&B.

In addition to the book, Flowerz is immersed in creating her brand of empowering others. While she caters to helping women find their voices, she said her poems and affirmations are for everyone.

She also is a life coach, podcaster and social media maven on Instagram and TikTok where she focuses on teaching women how to discover the positive effect of gratitude and positive talk.

When she arrived in Bowling Green last October, as a wife and new mother, she discovered the value of walking and practicing affirmations in nature.  She started a Gratitude Walk, with hopes of “making it into a movement,” she said.  She offers a “carefully curated Gratitude Walk Kit that will elevate your gratitude walk experience to new heights.”

Her podcast, “Affirmations: Journey with Flowerz,” is available on Spotify, Apple, Amazon Music, and Google. To learn more about Flowerz and her work, visit kayflowerz.com.
