George passed into the hands of the Lord on July 12, 2023 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
George was born on December 26, 1935 in a farmhouse in Darke County, Ohio.
George began high school in Fort Loramie, Ohio, where he played on the basketball team. Before his senior year he transferred to Findlay High School where he graduated. George attended Bowling Green State University (BGSU) where he received a degree in Journalism in 1957. While at BGSU George served as student body president and president of his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta. He married his lovely wife, Joan Virginia Martin on August 3, 1957, shortly after graduating.
George’s life is well defined by his active career. George pursued a degree in Journalism with the goal of writing for a national magazine. He began his journalism career at Steel, The Metalworking Weekly (renamed Industry Week) magazine, in Cleveland, Ohio, as an Assistant Editor, Associate Editor, International Editor, and ultimately Special Projects Editor.
In 1964, he and his family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked at Midwest Research Institute as a Manager reporting on Industrial Technology Services.
In 1965 George and his growing family moved to Arlington, Virginia where he began his work at the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA), as Director of the Technology Utilization Division.
In 1968 he and his completed family moved to Manhasset, New York, where he joined I.RM. (USA) Inc., New York, New York, as Executive Vice President.
It was in 1969 that George’s career in business truly began when he joined two institutional brokerage/investment firms in New York, New York: Equity Research Associates as a Securities Analyst and then Director of Research and Auerbach, Pollock & Richardson as a Senior Analyst and Member of the Investment Policy Committee.
In1973, the family moved to Lewiston, New York, where George joined The Carborundum Company as Vice President & Assistant to the President, and then was promoted to Vice President of Corporate Development. Subsequent to acquisition of Carborundum by Kennecott Copper Co., George served on President’s staff at Kennecott and led a successful proxy fight on behalf of the incumbent Board of Directors.
In 1978 George left the corporate world to become the Owner of Howick & Howick in Waynesville, N.C.
George began his teaching career in 1982 at his alma mater BGSU as Director of the Management Center and was a Distinguished Lecturer in Business Administration. During his time at BGSU, he produced and hosted a weekly television series, Ohio Business, on WBGU-TV, Public Broadcasting Network, for eight years. In addition, for one year he served as Development Officer for the College of Business Administration. In 1995, while at BGSU, George earned his M.B.A.
Following his work at BGSU in 1999, George began his work as a consultant to entrepreneurial companies, primarily as a strategy consultant. He was a member of the Boards of Directors for the following companies: Augurs Unlimited Inc., Bard Mfg. Co., Bostwick-Braun Co., CMC Group Inc., Century Marketing Co., ComDoc Inc., Hart Associates, Profile Communications Inc., SSOE Inc., L.E. Smith Co., Seaman Co., Support Systems Inc., and Vitamix Corp.
George received many honors & awards: 1990 Northwest Ohio Entrepreneur-of-the-Year; Special Merit Award, National Aeronautics & Space Administration; Michael Ferrari Award, Bowling Green State University; and the Freedoms Foundation Award for The Day Profits Disappeared, Steel Magazine, Penton Publishing Co. He was also the member of Honor Societies: Omicron Delta Kappa; Sigma Delta Chi; Beta Gamma Sigma.
George was a great supporter of higher education and with his wife Joan was a member of the Presidents Club, Bowling Green State University, and the Presidents Club, Hillsdale College.
George and his family are members of, St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Bowling Green, Ohio.
George is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Joan Martin Howick, his eldest son John Martin Howick, his daughter-in-law Amy Sue Gose-Howick, his mother Clara Meyer Howick Deloye, his father George Howick, his step father Norbert Deloye, his stepbrother, Richard Deloye, his stepsister Marlene Seger, his Uncle Wilfred Meyer, and his aunt Mary Meyer Weisgerber.
George is survived by his two daughters Mary Beth (Keith) Hansley and Cynthia Ann Ross, his two sons Stephan Christopher (Laurel Fisher) and Michael Joseph (Allison), his eight grandchildren: Alys Ann Eaton, Emma Jean Hansley, Savanah Ross, Danielle Ross, Ian Howick Smith, Marine Lou Francis Howick, Jack Martin Howick and Kate Elizabeth Howick, three step grandchildren Joel Gollehon, Sean Gollehon and Seth Gollehon, 4 great grandchildren Ember Eaton, London Eaton, Alondra Scott and Lenah Berry.
A celebration of George’s life will take place at 10:00 A.M. on August 3, 2023 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Bowling Green, Ohio. Father Tom McQuillen will officiate. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the John Martin Howick Memorial Scholarship Fund at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio.
