Christmas in Korea, he found a small stick and placed it into the ground
to represent a Christmas tree. He earned his 1st Purple Heart, August 8,
1950 in Subucksan Mountain in South Korea. He was in a rice patty in a Jeep
and was ambushed by the Chinese who joined with North Korea. He earned his
2nd Purple Heart, January 17, 1951, at night, while driving a Jeep, and hit
a landmine. The passenger, an Electrician Lineman was fatally
injured.  He was sent to Sasahull, Japan for surgery, then to Tokyo, Japan
for nine months before being shipped back to Washington State. From there
he went to Desert Rock Nevada, for 3 Atomic Bomb tests, which was four
miles from the site.  J.R. was there for almost a year, then was sent back
to Fort Warden, Washington and was honorably discharged November 1952.
George first worked as a Bus Boy at Isaly’s, in Bowling Green after
school hours, then at Portage Drive-In Movie Theatre, directing vehicles
to parking spaces.  He then worked as an attendant for Marve Deywer, at
the Marathon Gas Station on North Main Street in Bowling Green.  After
getting out of the Army, he was employed at Peters Stamping, Perrysburg, a
day after he got discharged.  He then worked for Toledo Desk, where they

celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2017 by renewing their wedding
vows.  They were devoted to each other from when they first met until the
very end.
J.R. was a BGSU hockey fan and held season tickets for many years.
His favorite T.V. shows were Price Is Right, Wheel of Fortune, Lawrence
Welk and NASCAR races.  With J.R.’s sense of humor and quick wit he was the
king of one-liners.  He loved being with family and the church family.
We think he had some green in his blood…he loved his John Deere
tractor and took great pride in maintaining his lawn.  He also spent many
enjoyable hours riding around the countryside on his Harley.
J.R. was a kind, thoughtful, honorable, loving man and will be missed
greatly by all who knew and loved him.
