Harmful algal bloom has significantly declined

The Microcystis cyanobacteria bloom in the western basin of Lake Erie has declined. Observed conditions from Sept. 23 through Sept. 26 supported mixing of the remaining surface concentrations.

Recent satellite imagery from Sept. 25 is partially obscured by clouds, but no chlorophyll is visible alongshore Michigan and Ohio coasts.

Microcystis concentrations are below detectable limits in all samples but one from Maumee Bay. The persistent cyanobacteria bloom in Sandusky Bay continues.
